Summary

Shortlisted for: Popular Non-Fiction Book of the Year – Specsavers National Book Awards 2012

Michael Palin journeys to a vast country of unimaginable contrasts - Brazil. An economic powerhouse, it is host to a staggering variety of peoples. He starts his journey in the north, in the remote mountains and forests on the border with Venezuela, and finishes in the south at the legendary Iguaçu Falls. He travels by river-boat, float-plane and foot to visit tribes deep in the jungle, samples life in the agricultural and mining heartland of Brazil, experiences the modernism of Brasília and the heady mix of Rio de Janeiro, and ventures into the favelas. He travels down the northeast coast with its African-inspired culture; to São Luís; Recife and Salvador, where Michael is swept up in Candomblé. He heads to São Paulo, where the super-rich commute by helicopter; tastes German beer served from a motorcycle sidecar, and tries his hand at being a cowboy before journey's end beneath one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the world.

I canot wait!

I finished this over the weekend and must say it is up there with 'Around the World' and ' Himalaya's' - Now I cant wait to see the TV version as MP struts his stuff around this vast continent. He captures just about everything, with his wonderful humour and accents, its really very, very good and I have no hesitation in recommending it to you guys! It is amazing that this country is so diverse with such a massive culture difference, but everyone rubs along together and makes it work! He covers just about everything that you want to know, from politics to football, economics and gay marches. Now the problem is, what will he will do next?...USA I suspect, now that would be fun, poking fun at them...cant wait again.

Yet another superb example from Michael

I have followed Michael Palin ever since he started with his TV travelogues and since joining Audible I have been enjoying them all over again. This latest adventure is as good as all the others and it makes me want to go to Brazil and experience all of the wonderful sights and sounds that great country has. Listen to it yourself I am sure you won't regret it.

A wonderfull insight into this intriguing country

What did you like best about this story?

The book highlights some wonderful people along the way which really leave you with an impression of the Brazilian way of life. It highlights the vast area of the country whilst via those encounters demonstrates the significant differences between the various areas. I downloaded the book as I am visiting for the world cup next year and feel I have a much better understanding of Brazilian culture as a result of listening, whilst obviously acknowledging any book attempting to cover such a vast country could only ever hope to really scratch the surface.

I did enjoy the way individual encounters are used to give a personality to the regions.

Overall an excellent listen/read.

Armchair Travelling at its Best

I am completely biased. I have loved all of Michael Palin's TV series. And his books are equally as good too. helped by the author narrating them himself.

I find them witty, in site full and, sometimes, even cringe worthy.

But worth listening too again and again.

I look foward to him revisiting many of the sites in his books ... hint, hint.

Brazil Volume 1

Palin is at his very best here with a true evocation of the place and the people. He is such a joy to listen to and you always get the rye humour as well as his affection for whomever he is meeting at the time. I thought this would be very long and somewhat tedious as much as the TV show was too short but sweet but I have thoroughly enjoyed it. This reading has whetted my appetite to visit which has been on my to do list for over 30 years!.

Very informative and exotic

Very enjoyable narration as usual, though Palin’s Brazilian accents made me giggle. A real voyage of discovery.

Brazil

Michael Palin is the king of narration. His warm and friendly style really draws the listener in and makes you wish you were there with him. The best thing is he is a Sheffield United fan, and of course Santos!

Another fantastic journey by Michael Palin

Another in his travel series, this time Michael Palin travels to Brazil to enjoy all the country has to offer. From the forests and mountains indigenous people to the coffee plantation and on to the cities of San Paulo and Rio. He also visits some of the communities forged from the European migration hundreds of years ago to learn how their cultures are a blend of the original country and Brazil.
