Robert Southey (1774-1843) était un écrivain, poète, traducteur et biographe romantique anglais. Il est aujourd'hui surtout connu pour son conte Boucle d'Or et les Trois Ours. Un passioné de la Révolution Française, il publie en 1794 avec Samuel Coleridge une pièce de théâtre intitulée La Chute de Robespierre. Il se maria aussi avec la belle-sœur de celui-ci. De plus, il recommanda à Charlotte Brontë, qui lui dédia plusieurs de ses écrits, d'abandonner l'écriture, car cela allait selon lui à l'encontre des devoirs d'une femme.
