Summary

The top 10 best seller.

Shortlisted for the Richard and Judy search for a best seller competition.

Did I know it would come to this? There is no shot at redemption. I am going to die. The gun is in my eye-line as the second bullet is fired. That's the one that kills me.

Late at night, two powerful men meet in a secret location to discuss a long nurtured plan about to come to fruition. One is desperate to know there is nothing standing in their way - the other assures him everything is taken care of. Hours later, a high-ranking government official called Ryan Finnegan is brutally slain in the most secure building in Ireland - Leinster House, the seat of parliament. Inspector Tom Reynolds and his team are called in to uncover the truth behind the murder.

At first, all the evidence hints at a politically motivated crime, until a surprise discovery takes the investigation in a dramatically different direction. Suddenly the motive for murder has got a lot more personal...but who benefits the most from Ryan's death?

Brilliant

This series just gets better and better as we get to know Tom Reynolds and his family and team more each time. Add in a great tale of murder and political shenanigans and an excellent narrator and you have hours of deeply joyful entertainment 😊

Good, maybe not great

I so enjoyed the first in the Tom Reynolds series from Jo Spain but found this second book a bit of non-starter, my main problem being that I just didn't really know or care enough about the victim to worry who the murderer was. The book got significantly better, for me, towards the end and I'm glad I persevered as I assume the main protagonists will be re-appearing along with their developing back stories, in subsequent titles.

Too political but held my interest

I enjoyed the ongoing development of the regular characters and their relationships with each other. The story had chunks of political information which dragged on at times. I guessed the culprit and some of the plot. Hope the next in series is as good as the first.

Political process disguised as a story

Spain's main character switches off when politics is mentioned, yet the writer insists on shoving every aspect of politics down her reader's throats. Not what I expect from Jo Spain.

Bit disappointed

I usually love Jo Spain but I found this story was lacking the usual suspense.

Some of the accents were a bit off as well which was distracting.

Good Story

A bit slow . Narrator was good. Could have had more cliff hangers to keep you turning the pages

Another excellent story

Original, contemporary and never obvious. Another feast for the mind to indulge in human frailty, but with a rye edge.

Riveting

Excellent murder mystery and a great listen -Well done to Aoife. The Irish influence includes DI Reynolds personal life interwoven with his daily workload and is so very believable. Have already ordered book 3

Chapter numbers don’t match audio...

Jo Spain never disappoints, always keeps you hooked and wondering.
Just one thing to point out - this is the second of her audiobooks on Audible where the numbers of the chapters don’t match the audio - Chapter 1 is read as the prolog, and Chapter 2 read as Chapter 1 and so on... a small irritation but an irritation all the same!

Gripping story and brilliantly

An absorbing and engaging detective novel. Following on from the first in the series this different and twisting tale follows the same team but with a insightful backdrop of politics.
