Summary

Sir Philip Rookwood is the disgrace of the county. He's a rake and an atheist, and the rumors about his hellfire club, the Murder, can only be spoken in whispers. (Orgies. It's orgies.)

Guy Frisby and his sister, Amanda, live in rural seclusion after a family scandal. But when Amanda breaks her leg in a riding accident, she's forced to recuperate at Rookwood Hall, where Sir Philip is hosting the Murder.

Guy rushes to protect her, but the Murder aren't what he expects. They're educated, fascinating people, and the notorious Sir Philip turns out to be charming, kind - and dangerously attractive.

In this private space where anything goes, the longings Guy has stifled all his life are impossible to resist...and so is Philip. But all too soon, the rural rumor mill threatens both Guy and Amanda. The innocent country gentleman has lost his heart to the bastard baronet - but does he dare lose his reputation too?

Contains mature themes.

I think this is my absolute favourite audiobook!

Love this story and the narration. Love, friendship, debauching, tree-climbing, portrait-painting, stone monsters and more.

Brilliant!!

Audio Review

Well done Cornell Collins aka Matthew Lloyd Davies for restoring my faith in narrators. I loved this story so much, and to be honest, was quite annoyed when I saw who was narrating it BUT pulled up my big girl pants and decided to take a chance on it. FAB-U-LOUS!! I particularly liked his voice for Lord Corvin, although his West Indian accent for John Raven could do with some work [sounded more Welsh than anything 😉]. Aunt Beatrice was suitably awful...as was her dreadful husband, and the Reverend whatever his name was, predictably boring. I absolutely ADORE Guy, Sir Philip and especially that little strumpet of a sister Amanda. Fantastic.

Book Review

5 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 from me...oh, and 5 💜💛💙💚🧡 too for Philip and Guy's lovely, gentle romance.

The laughs, the sarcasm, the naughty Latin words [former bored Latin scholar here hehe], the comeuppance for the dreadful Aunt Beatrice 😝, but most of all the brilliant Murder [read the story, you'll then understand the reference] Hellfire Club and more importantly its witty members, who were supportive of Philip to a man.

Lots of authors try to imitate KJ Charles, but she reigns supreme as far as this reader is concerned for her marvellous wit and delicious characters. Bravo!!

Great story from my favourite romance author

KJ Charles does dialogue and banter and characters so well. She always finds details to make her characters believable and unique. This story is no exception and I loved having a strong-minded, accomplished female character thrown in as well. The bedroom scenes are delightfully caring and awkward and deliciously steamy. Great narration too. I thoroughly enjoyed this!

A jewel of a book

I love the description "Heyer-but-gayer". Of all the regency romances I have read, this is the first one I have found as funny and satisfying as an actual Georgette, albeit with a lot more sex. It's also a fun twist on the plot of Venetia, with the brother being the love interest instead of the sister. Heyer fans will enjoy spotting all the similarities in both characters and setup.

Wonderful narration too. Don't expect anything too heavyweight, but it's a delight from beginning to end.

Very Enjoyable

Very enjoyable to listen to. Good story with great characters. The ending felt a little lacklustre, perhaps a short chapter set a few months later would have been nice. Still a very good story to listen to. Well narrated as well.

Just wonderful!

I absolutely loved this book. Philip and Guy were so perfect together, and Guy’s progression from diffident, unsure innocent to loving and accepting Philip’s love, albeit having to rely on Latin and ancient Greek when he couldn’t bring himself to say the words in English, was a delight. So funny and tender too. What fun The Murder sound; best house party ever. And, of course, Cornell Collins’ narration was quite, quite brilliant. He had me from the first paragraph, such a heavenly voice. I found the whole thing more moving and enjoyable than I could ever have expected (being a slightly batty, middle aged woman who devours Georgette Heyer’s novels for their dashing heroes and witty banter). This had all that, and more sex of course, with a MM romance as glorious as any I have ever read. Loved it

Pure romance and spice

This was a very steamy romance novel about two male characters. All of the characters of the story were their own, and the character arcs that developed were lovely. I also liked the conflicts, quite serious with the sister’s broken leg. And then the twists and turns of propriety causing such adventurous dilemmas. A very steamy and spicy read with hot love scenes. Another winner from this author who seems to write with wild abandon, which I’m very glad for.

OK

An OK tale of a country house party in the 'shires featuring a scandalous novel, a deflowering, a broken leg, several rakes, an outraged aunt and an orchestra. The excellent narration hypes the drama within the story which is actually quite dull and not up to the true zest and spice of Regency life and other historic novels of the genre ie These Old Shades or The Talisman Ring by Georgette Heyer. There is a lack of sumptuous description of interiors, environs and outfits, even small clothes divested during the MM interludes. No where near as good as Any Old Diamonds. Guy and Philip are actually insipid MCs. NOT UP TO SNUFF
