Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

ONE OF THE GUARDIAN'S 100 BEST BOOKS OF THE 21st CENTURY

Adapted into a major film starring Keira Knightley, James McAvoy and Saoirse Ronan.

'A person is, among all else, a material thing, easily torn and not easily mended'

On the hottest day of the summer of 1935, thirteen-year-old Briony Tallis sees her sister Cecilia strip off her clothes and plunge into the fountain in the garden of their country house.

Watching her too is Robbie Turner who, like Cecilia, has recently come down from Cambridge. By the end of that day, the lives of all three will have been changed for ever, as Briony commits a crime for which she will spend the rest of her life trying to atone.

A beautifully written story

Ian Mc Ewan never disappoints-this is a fantastically written story of disappointed and unfulfilled love, betrayal and lies and the central character coming to terms with who she really is. Much of it is set just prior to and then during ,WW2.
Mcewans imagery is magnificent-there we’re places where I couldn’t bear to listen anymore but also couldn’t stop myself.
I felt torn between absolute hatred of the child Bryony and then abject sympathy for her as she reached adulthood and the enormity of her transgression dawned on her. Compelling reading and very well narrated.

Magnificent!

Atonement is McEwan at the height of his powers and is his best work, by some distance. The story is a deeply moving tragedy arising from the all too credible misjudgment of a young girl with a vivid imagination which rapidly snowballs out of her control. Part 1, particularly, contains some of the best writing in the English language and the narration is absolutely faultless, really bringing this superb work to life.

Not my favourite Ian McEwan

Despite its fame, it’s not my favourite. Still a clever story, deep characters and well written but a bit cheesy at times and too much war-nostalgia for my taste. The reader adds to that by indulging in a bit of a nostalgic tone. Still well worth listening to!

Beautiful and heartbreaking

Wonderful story which was narrated well and had my full attention throughout. To often with audiobooks I find myself doing other things and not taking everything in, not the case for this book.

Excellent. Really enjoyed it

Would you consider the audio edition of Atonement to be better than the print version?

I have read the book but really enjoyed hearing the story - it bought it to life for me.

What does Carole Boyd bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Really great reading; smooth and handles the language of the book brilliantly.

Any additional comments?

Overall an excellent story with great characters; beautifully written and thoroughly absorbing.

really is the second worst ending in literature !

Excellent writing, harrowing story, authentic characters. Hugely disappointing ending.

Having said that, I understand that the author was making a point, but I felt it could have been much more satisfying.

Powerful and captivating. Much better than the film. The ending made me sad it was over.
