Abandoning the Cotswolds village that raised him, the young Laurie Lee walks to London. There he makes a living labouring and playing the violin. But, deciding to travel further a field and knowing only the Spanish phrase for 'Will you please give me a glass of water?', he heads for Spain. With just a blanket to sleep under and his trusty violin, he spends a year crossing Spain, from Vigo in the north to the southern coast. Only the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War puts an end to his extraordinary peregrinations....

An absolute wonder!
This has been my favourite book since I first read it at 15 years of age. To now be able to listen to it being read by the wonderful Laurie Lee is a real joy! Now on to A moment of war.

Beautifully written
Leaving his home in a Cotswolds village, Laurie Lee walked to London, earning a living as a labourer and busking in the streets with his violin. Yearning to travel, he set out for Spain, travelling from the northern to the southern coast…
I never got around to reading Laurie Lee’s books when everyone else of my generation was reading them. Typically, I started with the second of his autobiographical trilogy, the first being the acclaimed Cider with Rosie. I’d also thought this one concerned the Spanish Civil War, but it turns out that period is covered in the last of the trilogy, A Moment of War. Anyway, what impressed me most about this book is the sheer beauty of his writing. While nothing terribly exciting happens during his travels, his descriptions of the countryside, the people, and the atmosphere are nothing less than stunning. The audiobook is narrated by the author.
Beautifully written, crammed with imagery and atmosphere.

Laurie Lee's voice and the unimaginably beautiful prose.
I was lucky enough to meet Laurie Lee back in 1985. His writing can bring you to tears for it's pure mastery.

Brilliantly Descriptive
A very evocative read. Every page a new discovery. Interesting to gain intimate insight of life for a youth of the 1930s, travelling through Spain. I was reminded of my own sense of delight, awe and wonder as a 20 Yr old exchange student of art, in Spain for the first time.
