Summary

Anomaly examines the prospect of an alien intelligence discovering life on Earth. The technological gulf between humanity and the alien species is measured in terms of millions of years. The only way to communicate is using science, but not everyone is so patient.

Humanity's first contact with an alien intelligence is far more radical than anyone has ever dared imagine. With a technological gap of millions of years, mankind is barely able to recognize the arrival of an alien space craft outside the gates of the United Nations in New York.

Interesting concept

Really like the way the book has been written, kinda from a 3rd person narrative.. really good and interesting take on what could happen, this book surprised me tbh, will be listening to more

4 hours in barely any actual scif,i just a story about a teacher and how he fell in love... waste of a credit.

gateway science section

I feel like I'm not the intended audience for this novel. I'm a great fan of sci-fi and a science teacher myself. the book is very solid, but I found myself being disappointed with the development of the sci-fi elements. it reminds me of a history essay I wrote when I was at school. we had to imagine we had travelled back in time and joined a native American tribe. the story I wrote was very contrived as I took every opportunity I could to insert information that I'd researched

the story of the novel has genuine heart and I found myself really rooting for the two main characters. it was extremely convenient that our main protagonist was a science teacher, as it allowed the author to include and explain a lot of science. I might recommend this book to a student who is interested in the idea of alien contact as I think they would introduce them to lots of relevant discussion points on the topic

I think the author achieved his goal of writing an intelligent first contact story and yet I didn't find it opened my mind in the way that other sci-fi books have done. I'd much sooner recommend exhalation by Ted Chang or children of time by Adrian Tchaikovsky, or revelation space by Alistair Reynolds

Enjoyable listen

I found this audio book by accident and really enjoyed it! Great characters and well narrated! Would love to see more of the two leading characters in some sort of continuation of their adventure.

Ok story, emotionless narrator

The story was fine but I struggled with the narration. The narrator's voice was monotonous, hardly any emotions came through. The story also had some points where the characters described things as if they were writing a novel. I wouldn't expect a person in shock to speak like that. The concept was interesting and was nice to see the anomaly from different perspectives as well.

Nice original take

On a first contact scenario, enjoyed the characters and narration is good. This is the third of this series I’ve listened to and I’ll listen to more in due course.

Excellent

Love the way he puts real science into the story. Definitely influenced by Carl Sagan
