Summary
For a boy coming of age and discovering a magical self-reliance and new powers for every occasion, the future is in the cards, in this fantasy adventure.
Arthur lives with his father, a fallen but proud former noble, in Border Village #49, along with the other good folks condemned to toil in service to the Baron. But Arthur has an edge: a stolen heart card that secretly fell into his possession, thanks to a dragon. It’s a priceless source of power for the Baron and the tyrant will kill to get it back. Invaluable, too, to a young man of spellcasting ambitions.
So, at the behest of his father—and to save his own hide—Arthur flees and joins a trader caravan on the kingdom’s backroads. Mile by dusty mile, he gains new skills and learns more about his increasing capabilities. But when he meets Horatio, his sharp-tongued new best friend and a spell card collector himself, Arthur discovers the greater powers to come by building on the Legendary card hidden close to his heart.
One step ahead of the Baron’s hunters, Arthur and Horatio forge on under a sky full of guardian dragons—from the adorably loopy to the mystically wise—and their unflappable riders. Amidst danger, rescue, and friendships with both humans and those creatures of the more leathery variety, Arthur awakens to a newfound confidence . . . and the extraordinary things that can arise from the simplest magics.
The first volume of the hit progression fantasy series, featuring a unique card-based magic system, now available for the first time!
Critic reviews
“A fantastic work that is fast establishing Honour Rae as one of the big names of LitRPG. The characters, plot, and world-building are incredibly compelling, and like many readers, my only issue was devouring it and then having to wait for more.”—Travis Deverell aka Shirtaloon, bestselling author of He Who Fights with Monsters

Definitely worth a credit!
Actually a really good listen. I'm quite fussy with my LitRPG's but this one is good.
Good story, good writing and good narration. Just download it - you won't be disappointed!

Surprisingly good
I really did not expect too much from this for some reason, and to be fair I found it a little slow initially, but then I realised I was getting into it more and more, to the extent that by the end of the first book I had no issues immediately ordering book 2, which I am just about to start. I’ve not heard a Litrpg using cards before, but I am relatively new to the genre so maybe it’s a common thing. Either way I find I really liked it. And before I forget, the narrator was very good as well. I definitely recommend this book.

Very poggers
I don’t have long to write this but it is amazing and I think you should give it a listen charge through the boringish starting chapters then you’ll love it 🤝

A really interesting story but a bit too linear
I liked the concept of this book much more than I expected to. The storyline is genuinely gripping at times but is all just a bit too straightforward, there’s not much intrigue and what mystery there is just gets slightly ignored rather than laid up. The reader does do good voices, but the narration voice is a bit more like a children’s book than young adult or fantasy. That said, I’m genuinely intrigued to see where the book goes next and I’m going to download the next book right now. I also love the post credits peace!

Impressive!
I wasn’t sure about the whole deck building genre but decided to give this a go regardless. The story was engaging and the mechanics worked great. I’ve heard Luke Daniels before and really like him as a narrator. The bloopers at the end were a nice touch, too.

Best book I've listened to in 2023
Not as serious as the stormlight saga and not as uninteresting as many I've listened to recently.
Already ready the second and will buy the third, forth, fifth, etc when they come out

it's a shame... I wish it was longer
Definitely not what i expected. This book has a gripping story, a likeable MC and an amazing well fleshed out world.
The card system is far better than others in the same category and to be honest, the "card" concept originally put me off from getting this book. But, as I listened to the story I learnt I was wrong.
This book is rather unique as the MC doesn't follow the traditional "OP best fighter/mage/all rounder route" he is an under dog fighting for every penny with grit and determination. His abilities are not the traditional arc type character that you would expect... I won't say more.. spoilers...
This book is a gem.
can't wait for the next one.

Really enjoyable progression
This book had a really enjoyable twist on the litRPG genre, with a logically laid out card magic system and well built world. The protagonist is generally very sensible and focused on his goals, although tends to get by more often on luck than making particularly good decisions. I’m really interest to see where this goes in the next book.
