Summary

The action-packed official adaptation of Alien: Isolation and a revealing look into the lives of Ellen Ripley and her daughter, Amanda Ripley.

The product of a troubled and violent youth, Amanda Ripley is hellbent to discover what happened to her missing mother, Ellen Ripley. She accepts an assignment with a Weyland-Yutani team being sent to retrieve the Nostromo flight recorder from space station Sevastopol, which they find out of control due to a Xenomorph that was brought there with the recorder. A conspiracy unfolds, revealing ever greater threats - including an entire Xenomorph hive. Over the course of the novel, Amanda’s history is revealed beginning with her childhood. Her father Alex’s battle with alcoholism caused her mother, Ellen Ripley, to sue for divorce. Ellen was forced to take off-world assignments, ultimately leading to her assignment aboard the Nostromo. Left behind, Amanda became determined to find out what happened to her mother, learning more and more about Ellen and the events that led up to her disappearance. Along the way, Amanda develops a fast friendship with Colonial Marine Zula Hendricks (from the Alien: Defiance Dark Horse series).

Good, but not essential

Creating an audio book based off a video game is always tricky. This retelling of the events aboard Sevastopol station is good for those who have played 2014's stellar video game as well as newcomers.

The main issue for me is the jumping back and forth between current events and Amanda Ripley's childhood. In places it really stops the momentum from one chapter to the next.

I also appreciate that they read out sone of the text logs found in the game as they add depth to the story, but to end each one with "that disclaimer" just grates after a while.

Companion to the video game.

This is a really nice addition to the franchise, and accompanies the video game nicely. It remains faithful to the plot of the have, embellishing here and there with bits of back story and character development that there was no room for in game play.

I'm not sure whether this would with as a stand alone addition to the story for someone unfamiliar with the game, but I'd certainly recommend you give it a go.

This tells the story of Amanda, Ripley's daughter, as she travels to a distant space station in search of information about her mother, 15 years after the events of Alien.

Great book!

Only issue I had was that the narrator used the same (or very similar) voice for a number of non-main characters. It was sometimes hard to decipher who was involved which lost immersion at some points

Only for fans of the game.

The performance is excellent. Would certainly look for other works by the narrator.

The story is either:

A - Very average as far as Alien stories go, little originality, not worth your time...go listen to a different book.

or...

B - Excellent if you're a fan of the game. There are a few bits that add extra development to the character that allows the silent protagonist of the game to be fleshed out with some backstory. Listening to the story with knowledge of the game (when you know and can see in your minds eye the exact location) is a surprisingly engaging experience.

Also it does set up any future games (unlikely I guess) or stories (more likely) well enough to be interesting.

In short it depends who you are. For hardcore Alien fans and gamers it's a big yes, for everyone else it's not essential.

Must listen

A great audiobook.
Loved it from start to finish, really held my attention.
loved the back story from Amanda's childhood, found it added context and character to Amanda.
Would highly recommend a listen, no requirement to have played the game.

didnt really do the source material justice

all of the harking back to childhood and mother searching felt like a distraction from an otherwise good action alien book

how to go from bad to worse

A fabulous story, where you regularly think "finally safe, surely nothing else can go wrong," and then it does. Not obvious or predictable, but very Alien.
