Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Join historian Suzannah Lipscomb as she reveals the hidden secrets of palaces, castles, theatres and abbeys to uncover the stories of Tudor England. From the famous palace at Hampton Court where dangerous court intrigue was rife, to less well-known houses, such as Anne Boleyn's childhood home at Hever Castle or Tutbury Castle, where Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned, follow in the footsteps of the Tudors in the places that they knew.

In the corridors of power and the courtyards of country houses, we meet the passionate but tragic Kateryn Parr, Henry VIII's last wife; Lady Jane Grey, the nine-day queen; and hear how Sir Walter Raleigh planned his trip to the New World. This lively and engaging book reveals the rich history of the Tudors and paints a vivid and captivating picture of what it would have been like to live in Tudor England.

Perfect

I have always loved Suzannah’s documentaries, and she writes a wonderful book here. While some of the text leads you to believe you might be missing out on a few tid bits without the physical copy, I happily sacrifice that to listen to her narration. It’s like a documentary you can close your eyes too. Makes falling asleep very relaxing.

Informative and enjoyable

a very enjoyable listen. full of interesting facts and highlights a few places I'll have to go visit again and some for the first time.
I never realised there was a new pronunciation of Sir Walter Raleigh agreed by academics. Took me a moment to realise who they were talking about!

Fantastic and inspiring

Firstly, I live listening to and watching Suzannah. I find her passion for history mesmerising. If I have anything negative to say, it’s that I would have liked this to be longer, more detailed. Maybe Suzannah should have her other Tudor pieces on audible

Wonderful book

I enjoyed this book so much. Such a great idea. I wished I was twice as long. I’m going to get out and visit some of theses houses during the spring and summer.

History made interesting.

An interesting and informative history of Tudor times and history.
I have visited many of the locations in this book without really knowing the history and will certainly visit many again, armed with this book.
Excellently narrated by Dr. Lipscomb.

A must listen!

Fabulously and enthusiastically narrated this is a real gift of an audiobook. My 7 and 9 year old have become so obsessed with Tudor history and this novel device of using landmarks to tell the tales was just sensational. They begged to listen on the school run and I wanted to listen on once they were at school! Thank you for a great family experience! We will be listening again and visiting all the sites!

Engaging and Informative

I love listening to Suzannah, I discovered her on her podcast ‘Not Just the Tudors’ she’s a joy to listen to and the information in the book is concise and interesting. You’re taken on a tour around the country with each stop rooted in history about the buildings and people of Tudor Britain. A great one to dip into before a cultural day out or even to inspire your next trip!
