Summary

In post-World War I England, Lady Phoebe Renshaw and her lady’s maid, Eva Huntford, encounter an uncharitable killer at a charity luncheon sponsored by a posh school for girls....

Good deeds build good character, and good character is what the Haverleigh School for Young Ladies is all about. Lady Phoebe - with the tireless assistance of Eva - has organised a luncheon at the school to benefit wounded veterans of the Great War, encouraging the students to participate in the cooking and the baking. But too many cooks do more than spoil the broth - they add up to a recipe for disaster when the school’s headmistress, Miss Finch, is poisoned.

The girls at Haverleigh all come from highly respected families, none of whom will countenance their darling daughters being harassed like common criminals by the local police. So Lady Phoebe steps in to handle the wealthy young debutantes with tact and discretion, while Eva cosies up to the staff. Did one of the girls resent the headmistress enough to do her in? Did a teacher bear a grudge? What about the school nurse, clearly shell-shocked from her service in the war?

No one is above suspicion, not even members of the school’s governing body, some of whom objected to Miss Finch’s 'modern' methods.

But Lady Phoebe and Eva will have to sleuth with great stealth - or the cornered killer may try to teach someone else a lethal lesson.

Get another editor!

A reasonably entertaining listen. But HUGELY sloppy work on the part of the editors. I'm not going to clutch my pearls at language that isn't 100% authentically post-war. But "students"? "Assignments"? Veterans?" Could they not find a few hundred quid to wave the manscript under the nose of an actual Brit?

Great read, but not as good as others

Really enjoyed this book but felt that there was something lacking after the last one. Still keen to continue the series. Would recommend to anyone who enjoys the genre.

an enjoyable cozy listen

a thoroughly pleasant way to spend a long car journey. Easy listening with a light engaging story. The narrator performs appropriate voices and accents suitable for each character which I feel is a must in a good audio book. I look forward to the next in the series

Easy listening mystery

Enjoyable to listen to, relaxing but interesting story relaying social conceptions changing post WW1. Main characters are likable.

Okay but...

....spoiled by too many Americanisms, anachronistic dialogue and historical inaccuracies. Obvious who the offender was.

Simplistic story made worse by irritating errors

The story is so so and i quite enjoyed it as a background while cooking, but the historical errors grated.
To give credit where its due she did get quite a lot right especially since shes the first author i've read who acknowledges things like superfluous women which was what the press called the lost generation of women who never married because after the first world war there was aproximatly 1 man for every 7 women (and a lot of them weren't compleat). However English policemen were not nor ever have been armed as part of their uniforms. Neither are they employed by the inspecter but by the police force itself. The title pastor is rarely used in the UK and you would have struggled to find a methodist church (or a RC for that matter) in a small Cotswold village in 1919 -If Pheobe was looking for a church she would have gone to the parish church which would have been C of E.
The narrator was quite good and did add to the story.
