Summary

A funeral, a ghost, a murder...It's all in a day's work for Emma Lee Raines...

Bopped on the head from a falling plastic Santa, local undertaker Emma Lee Raines is told she's suffering from "funeral trauma." It's trauma all right, because the not-so-dearly departed keep talking to her. Take Ruthie Sue Payne - innkeeper, gossip queen, and arch-nemesis of Emma Lee's granny - she's adamant that she didn't just fall down those stairs. She was pushed.

Ruthie has no idea who wanted her pushing up daisies. All she knows is that she can't cross over until the matter is laid to eternal rest. In the land of the living, Emma Lee's high-school crush, Sheriff Jack Henry Ross, isn't ready to rule out foul play. Granny Raines, the widow of Ruthie's ex-husband and co-owner of the Sleepy Hollow Inn, is the prime suspect. Now Emma Lee is stuck playing detective or risks being haunted forever.

Contains mature themes.

Solving a murder with a helping hand

I want to say I enjoyed this book and for the most I did but there was just a few things that got annoying. I am not sure you are ment to end up liking the murder victim over the main characters own granny, especially as they were arch rivals but that's what happened. I just couldn't understand why Emma went to so much trouble to clear her name when the grandmother wouldn't even give her the time of day to answer a few questions. For a tight nit family that works together, they weren't very close. Also every time she spoke to someone she had to call them by there full name. Perhaps it's a southern thing but it just niggled. The mystery was easy to guess with no real surprises. I did like she was a funeral director and the fact it gives her to plenty of ghosts to help and to complicate her life. Although it seemed like most people suspected she was talking to ghosts. Not my favourite series by this author but I would probably give another book in this series ago just to see how and if it develops.
As a funeral director Emma is use to seeing dead bodies but it doesn't prepare you for your grandmother's arch rivals ghost to start following you. Ruthie claims she was pushed down the stairs and the police seem to be coming to the same conclusion, with the finger pointed squarely at Emma's granny. With her grandmother avoiding her questions it's up to Emma and her new ghost find to find the killer before she is arrested. Ruthie can't remember what happened that night but secrets need to be uncovered before it's too late and the kill strikes again.
The narrator used accents to bring the characters to life, which on the whole worked but there was a couple of times it just sounded whiny.
