David was born in Newburyport, Massachusetts, and attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. While there, he began illustrating. His first book was The RUNJUMPBUMB Book by Robert Brooks – published by Little Brown and Company in 1971. Later that year, the first of his own stories was published by Addison-Wesley Press, titled In the Summer I Go Fishing. David has continued to write and illustrate throughout his life and there are now well over 200 books with his name on them. McPhail's professional recognition includes a New York Times Best Illustrated Books honor for Edward and the Pirates, a Boston Globe/Horn Book Honor, a Children's Choice Award, a Parents' Choice Award, a Children's Booksellers Choices Award, a Best Books of the Year award from Publishers Weekly for Mole Music, and many state awards.
