1975
A baby, minutes old, is forcibly taken from its devastated mother.

The body of an elderly woman is found in a Dublin public park in the depths of winter.

Detective Inspector Tom Reynolds is on the case. He's convinced the murder is linked to historical events that took place in the notorious Magdalene Laundries. But once inside, it becomes disturbingly clear that the killer is amongst them . . . and is determined to exact further vengeance for the sins of the past.

I have to admit it took a few goes to get going with this book but I’m so glad I persevered.

Set in Ireland, we have a couple of murders and a bunch of nuns as the main suspects. This story has some fact based history interwoven within it and I found myself googling about the ‘laundry’s’ and the awful life unmarried mothers and fatherless children had in the not to distant past.

Aoife McMahon narrates splendidly both male and female voices. Well worth a credit.

Well written and well read.

Although you cannot say this book is pleasant to read because one has the feeling it is so near the truth, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The beginning is harrowing. Full of atmosphere but sometimes wretched, the story is captivating . The research must have been thorough which makes the story even more worrying. The Magdalene Laundries shall remain with me for a long time. The narration was perfect and the book brilliantly written.

Excellent book

Within just a few minutes I fell in love with this book or more precisely with the narrators voice and accent. But back to the book I really enjoy the characters. The storyline is distressing and I am sure much of it is based on fact I did look into the Magdalene Laundries and its terrible what happened. I really like DI Tom Reynolds unusually for a crime fiction book he isn't an ex drunk or drug user or a depressed detective, he is happily married also unusual for a crime fiction book. In fact all the team are normal this is a breath of fresh air and makes them more realistic.
As for the narrator well she is just wonderful I love the way she changes to different dialects from different counties how well they sound I have no idea as I am English but I love the Southern Irish accent.

Brilliant story Brilliantly read

I do enjoy a good thriller and this didn’t disappoint. From the opening chapter to the end I was enthralled. I did find the subject matter disturbing and upsetting but such is the nature of a good thriller. Jo Spain is now one of my favourite authors.
