I’ve read a lot of science fiction, fantasy and romance so I’ve engaged with authors creating new worlds to set their stories. An important question is why create a world? In this case I think it’s so the rules governing life and death can be circumvented. But as a reader I’m smothered in unnecessary new words, creatures and lengthy descriptions. I started to wonder if the author was paid by the word. It’s overkill and heavy handed and does not have the skill of Silverberg, Asimov, Tolkien or even Edgar Rice Burroughs 😂 but then few do.
Excellent voice cast. Loved those two and their voices are harmonious
Poetic descriptions? Not really but nice try. I had great hopes but thought the overblown phrases were funny.
Romance aspects I found the same descriptions again and again and yawned. Best again when the paragraphs are simple and full of feelings.
But you decide 😉

Dragons, world building, angst, revenge, romance - what more could you want!? I loved it from start to finish.

My favourite book I’ve read/listened to this year

The world is full of dragons and sometimes when they die, they curl up to a ball in the sky and die. Thats the moons. I guess the world is sort of cool, but the story is a bit slow, I’ve listened through the whole thing and i never really felt like they got to the point. I’m betting the next book will be better.

It has some nice spice, but it comes without buildup.

Ok where to start?!

First off I did enjoy, I think it's a nice set up for a series. Lots of open ended plot points. I liked the fmc, very complex character that I think we only scratched the surface of, interested to see where her story goes. The mmc wasn't my favourite but he has a lot of baggage so I reserve judgement till more books come out.

It did take me a good three attempts to get properly stuck in, you're dropped in the middle of the story (without knowing you're in the middle of the story) with zero context and it was all a bit overwhelming. I kept hoping that if I kept with it enough, it will all start making sense and it mostly did. I did have to refer to the glossery A LOT so I'm glad I also have a physical copy of the book. (I mostly listened to the audio).

I did feel that it's probably way longer than it needed to be. For such a long book I don't feel that all that much happened, just really slow pace.

Lastly I really wasn't a fan of the audio narrators. The female narrator gave me American news reader vibes and I struggled to keep my brain engaged. And for some reason there were two male narrators narrating the mmc which I found very confusing.

I think this is definitely one for a reread at some point.
