The story of the last two Housecarls from Harold Godwinson’s army who, forced from England by the Normans, journey down the Russian rivers to join the Varangian Guard where they fight, once more the Normans from Italy. The two men have to fight not only barbarians and the Empire’s enemies but treachery from within the complex world of Byzantine politics. Culminating in the battle which finally drove the Normans back to Italy, the historically accurate book paints a picture of the dying world of the Saxon warriors.©2013 Griff Hosker (P)2022 W. F. What a superb story. Characters are very well developed, both good and bad. An extraordinary journey through history and friendship. I highly recommend these audiobooks.

My favourite trilogy.

As usual GH has done it again. I love his books and he has bought the time of the Saxon Housecarls back to life. I think I’ve now downloaded the return Ridley and his son back to England. Looking forward to the series with eager anticipation.

Brilliant

A well narrated and immersive novel closing the story of Aelfread and leading to the anarchy series.

Great end to the trilogy
