Özet

When the dead get up, the guns last for weeks. The water lasts three days.

The System arrived the night after the dead did. It did not make anyone a hero. It read what people already were, off the licenses in their wallets, and reported the truth in flat capitals.

Vernon Dettmer, twenty-two years running a small city's water plant, drew PUBLIC WORKS, OPERATOR, GRADE III. People with combat classes laughed. Most of them were dead inside a month, and not one of the people drinking his water was.

Because his readout tells him what nothing else in the collapse will: the actual state of things. The chlorine left in the drums. The hours left in a bearing. The line at the top of the settlement sheet that reads STANDARD: NOT MET, and under it the number of days until that stops being a warning and starts being a body count.

His impossible move is telling people the real number.

The fuel, out loud. The food, out loud. The one number no leader wants to say: how many people the site can actually carry through winter, said to all of them, at a folding table, by lantern light.

The dead walk the fence line the whole time. They are weather. You design for them. What kills settlements is the latrine dug uphill of the water, the cut hand nobody looks at twice, the tank running dry while everyone watches the wire.

He has three days of chlorine, one old teacher, one fire captain who counts everything, and four wells standing two miles outside any fence anyone can build.

No combat class. No chosen one. No cure. The dead never get smarter, and the numbers never lie.

Book 1 of UTILITY CLASS, a five-book settlement-building apocalypse LitRPG about the man who keeps the water running, for listeners who want their survival earned in gallons, hours, and honest arithmetic.

I really enjoyed Utility Class. I liked that the story focuses on something different from the usual apocalypse books where the main character is a super strong fighter. Vernon is just trying to keep the water running, and somehow that made the survival side of the story feel much more realistic. The idea of knowing exactly how much water, fuel, food, and supplies are left really kept me interested, especially when every number could mean the difference between people surviving or not. I also liked the settlement-building aspect and seeing how small problems could become serious threats. It was a good mix of survival, strategy, and LitRPG elements, and I’m definitely curious to see what happens in the next book.

This story deeply resonated with me because it finally gives credit to the quiet, practical heroes of an apocalypse. Vernon Dettmer is incredibly relatable a guy whose 22 years at a water plant make him vastly more valuable than the laughing combat classes who die off so quickly. I was completely gripped by the human tension of him sitting at a folding table by lantern light, laying out the brutal, honest numbers of how many people his settlement can actually carry through winter alongside his meticulous fire captain. It’s a deeply satisfying survival story that proves keeping the water running and fixing the latrine dug uphill is the only true way to win.

I wasn’t expecting an apocalypse story to focus so much on something as basic as keeping the water running, but that’s what made this one interesting to me. Vernon isn’t some super-powered hero; he’s a water plant operator who understands just how important things like fuel, chlorine, food, and clean water are. I liked the part where he decides to tell everyone the real numbers, even though those are the things nobody wants to hear. It made the survival side of the story feel much more realistic and different from the usual apocalypse books.

The end of the world managed with maths, attention to technical detail & quiet competence. It won’t be everyone’s cup of tea but those of you who appreciate a slow & thoughtful approach to the apocalypse will enjoy this.

What caught my attention was that Vernon’s class is basically keeping the water system working while everyone else is trying to survive the apocalypse. A lot of the story deals with things like running out of chlorine, finding enough food and fuel, keeping the wells going, and figuring out how many people the settlement can support. The zombies are a problem, but it’s the everyday mistakes and shortages that seem just as dangerous. It was interesting to listen to an apocalypse story where survival comes down to keeping things running instead of having a hero who can fight his way through everything.
