Özet

It’s time to remake the world – the ground-breaking book on what steps we should all be taking for the autistic people in our lives.

The modern world is built for neurotypicals: needless noise, bright flashing lights, small talk, phone calls, unspoken assumptions and unwritten rules – it can be a nightmarish dystopia for the autistic population. In Untypical, Pete Wharmby lays bare the experience of being ‘different’, explaining with wit and warmth just how exhausting it is to fit in to a world not designed for you.

But this book is more than an explanation. After a late diagnosis and a lifetime of ‘masking’, Pete is the perfect interlocutor to explain how our two worlds can meet, and what we can do for the many autistic people in our schools, workplaces and lives. The result: a practical handbook for all of us to make the world a simpler, better place for autistic people to navigate, and a call to arms for anyone who believes in an inclusive society and wants to be part of the solution.

‘A wonderful book about achieving better awareness and a more inclusive society for people on the autism spectrum.’ – Roger Clark
‘This brilliant, funny, important book shows how we can all make the world a bit better for everyone but especially our neurodiverse friends, loved ones and possibly ourselves.’ Sarah Hart

A good book to buy if you are not Autistic (Alltistic) and want to understand why Autistic people are not Rainman.
It explains the Autistic experience of the modern world, and how you are probably subjecting Autistic people to Ableism without even realising it.

If you are autistic you will probably understand all of this, but it’s nice to hear another autistic person (yes Autistic People is the correct term, not People with Autism-see above for ableism) talk about their experience.

Everything you thought you know about Autistic people is wrong.

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book that I went to get the hardback copy. This book encompasses what autistic people go through trying to understand a world not built by the neurodiverse population. It is invaluable for those who want to understand an autistic person in their life too. It can count as a good reference to dip in and out of every so often. This would be the book I would gift anyone who asks me how can they understand what goes on in my head being autistic myself.

THE most relevant book on autism for everyone

This is the best book I have read on the subject of autism. I find it so helpful that now I recommend it to everyone! The author somehow managed to explain very well, difficult concepts of how it feels to be autistic, what difficulties autistic people experience and what neurotypical people can do, to make a world equal for everyone. Big applause and thanks to the author👏👏👏.

After finishing out my son was ASD and seeing a lot in myself (on a wait list) it was recommended that read this book. What a honest insight in to what it is like to live with ASD. The author did a fantastic job in explaining and with a sprinkling of humour too.
If you want to get a better understanding of the ASD person in your life then this is the book to start that journey with.

Thank you for your insight and detailed description, this has been very helpful indeed.
