Meet Willa Knox, a woman who stands braced against a world which seems to hold little mercy for her and her family - or their old, crumbling house, falling down around them. Willa's two grown-up children, a new-born grandchild, and her ailing father-in-law have all moved in at a time when life seems at its most precarious. But when Willa discovers that a pioneering female scientist lived on the same street in the 1800s, could this historical connection be enough to save their home from ruin? And can Willa, despite the odds, keep her family together?

Having the author read her own book and read it so well, was a real bonus on what is already a wonderful book. Again I learnt so much from Ms Kingsolver. Her talent is to tell a gripping story about characters you come to really care for while giving you nuggets of facts along the way. Of course her books have a political bias but to me that is a plus.

Another great book from Barbara Kingsolver

I really enjoyed it, but perhaps was not as gripped as for Poisonwood Bible or Flight Behaviour. Love her reading.

Another gripping story from Barbara Kingsolver.

I really enjoyed this book. Two stories in one and also very thought provoking on humanity and generational viewpoints.

Thoroughly enjoyable and thoughtful

There is a surprising joy in hearing a story told with the particular nuances and tones in which the story unfolded from the authors pen. Barbara Kingsolver is a masterful storyteller, she allows her characters to tell their own story in how their deepest emotions, joys and turmoil , beautifully unfold the story. The author artfully manages the transitions between families living in two different centuries. The house in which both families live and have almost inadvertently ‘landed’, provides a rich pallet of nuance and familiarity. A highly recommended read!

Masterful story telling and narration

I always look forward to a Barbara Kingsolver book. I think I’ve read all of them - each one so different from its siblings - and they always live up to expectations. This is the first of her books that I have listened to - and it is read by her too. That was a true bonus. Her reading was so enjoyable- had me laughing out loud quite a few times- and I think I’ll have to get the book too. Deftly switching from one generation to another, back and forth, with a story for each family that I couldn’t wait to get back to. I know I’ll hear her voice while I read it.

A true pleasure to listen to.
