An eager yet insecure young psychiatrist begins her first job in a women’s psychiatric unit—only to be met with cold resistance, strange irregularities, and troubling signs of mistreatment. Rejected not only by her colleagues but even her patients, she’s on the verge of quitting when tragedy strikes: one of her patients dies by suicide.
Refusing to walk away, she teams up with an old college crush and her determined mother to investigate. What they uncover is beyond her imagination—criminal negligence, illicit relationships, and the misappropriation of millions in state funds. Along the way, the hidden and extraordinary histories of the patients come to light, revealing how each woman ended up behind those doors.
As the state attorney’s office closes in on the perpetrators, the corrupt scheme unravels and justice is served—but at a heartbreaking cost: the loss of the only man she’s ever loved.
