Victor Standish, street gypsy living on the haunted streets of the French Quarter, should live in fear. But his is a philosophy of defiance…and love: "No one's life should be rooted in fear. We are born for wonder, for joy, for hope, for love, to marvel at the mystery of existence, to be wounded by the beauty of this world, to seek truth and meaning, to hunger for wisdom, and by our treatment of others to brighten the corner where we are."
Alice Wentworth, a Victorian ghoul, will one day be his demise when the hunger for his heart is over-ridden by her hunger for his flesh. But until that night, they cling to one another as they seek to survive the supernatural dangers of the secret French Quarter that few in New Orleans know about: Evolved raptors who prey on the street people in the alleys.
The European Empress of Vampires stealing into the city, waiting to conquer New Orleans with her minions. And the Demigod of Eternal Night who fling them back into the last century in order to destroy their mentor, the man with death in his veins, Samuel McCord. Can they win their way back to the present before the demigod of Eternal Night or Hurricane Katrina destroy all they love?
