"One of the most important books on policing and power. A must read." – Vikram Dodd, The Guardian

"A hard-hitting view of Britain's most controversial police force." – Martin Brunt

"A riveting insider’s account of modern UK policing." - Jonathan Bowman-Perks

"It should be compulsory reading for all Police Officers and Staff." – Reader review

This is the official autobiography of Neil Basu, the man at the heart of modern British policing. Turmoil offers an urgent, insider account of power, racism and reform - and the realities of life in public service.

In Turmoil, Neil Basu, the first person of colour to serve as Assistant Commissioner in the Met, offers an unflinching look at the structural racism embedded in the UK’s justice system. From the aftermath of Stephen Lawrence’s murder to the London riots, Basu was there for the defining moments of modern policing, and now he’s telling the truth from the inside.

With clarity, courage and compassion, Basu holds a mirror up to British policing, examining how racism, political interference and systemic injustice have shaped the force from within. This is a powerful contribution to Britain’s ongoing conversation on race, power and the state. Turmoil is essential reading for anyone interested in the realities of institutional racism and social justice in the UK, offering a vital new perspective on how we can move towards true accountability.

Together, these insights form a compelling case for change, and act as a timely reminder that the work belongs to all of us.

As an avid listener to the Crime Agents podcast I thought I'd give this a go and was really pleased I did. A very honest, reflective and well written account of a very impressive career. Not afraid to highlight the battles fought and the regrets felt still, Neil's humility and sense of responsibility to the job and the public is evident throughout. I hope he's enjoying retirement, he most definitely deserves it! Overall - an excellent listen.

Who better to give us an insight into the MET and the lived experience of institutional racism with the force and the true politics behind policing.

A very profound read

Cannot praise the honesty with which this book has been written highly enough especially the toll your dedication to your career took on your life and family . It is also brilliantly narrated.
The insight into policing , not just the Met , the highs and the lows . There is so much to learn from this book and what it is actually like to be a police officer in the Uk .
Also the involvement of the press and the media and politicians .
It is a compelling listen .
Thankyou.

Honesty and integrity

Incredible how much responsibility weighs on the shoulders of The Met, both its senior ranks and beat officers. I felt I learned a lot but it doesn't leave one with an overall positive feeling, especially with regards the culture (which we already knew to be lacking a moral compass at times) and the influence of politicians (which leaves me gravely concerned about the rise in populism). The line "over-policed but under-protected" will remain with me.

Insightful

As a serving officer I have heard about the Macpherson report many times, I've even read bits of it but until this book I never truly understood it. Neil brings a fresh perspective and for me this book opened my eyes. As a white officer I had never been able to see things through the eyes of black and brown colleagues, I feel now while I cant see through their eyes I can now understand their perspective a little more and the difficulties they endure. Thank you Neil for your honest book, admitting your faults and helping someone like me to understand a little better. And incredible "story" or an incredible life. Thank you!
