Young men who grow without the firm hand of a father can often become wild. James of Ecclestone is one such youth and when he runs away to become a billman fighting the Yorkist pretender, Lambert Simnel, he begins a journey that will shape him from a youth to a man, a wild child to a Tudor Warrior. Set against the backdrop of the early years of King Henry VIIth’s reign this fast-moving novel takes us from the Battle of Bramham Moor to the siege of Boulogne. Beginning with the battle of Bosworth field and ending with the Skirmish of Glastonbury Tor we see an England changing from Yorkist to Lancastrian and James of Ecclestone becoming a warrior of renown.©2022 Griff Hosker (P)2022 W. I loved the story I'm a history fan, but the narration just didn't do it for me, the other books I listened too had me hooked straight away great narrator's but I kept stopping with this one. I'll stick with the others but won't bother with this.

Great story

Thoroughly enjoying this book, and glad to see there are two more in the series.

Set shortly after Henry Tudor has defeated Richard II, the main character defies his father and, leaving his family's smallholding and village behind, runs off to prove himself as a warrior.

I'm very much looking forward to discovering what happens next. Visitors meant I had to pause my listening at Chapter 9, this morning .......and while we've had a nice time I'm glad I can now get back to the book!

A really good listen

This tale of a young man finding friends and meaning as a soldier was perfectly fine but just didn’t do for me. None of the characters really grabbed me and the narration felt quite one-note. There were also too many wrongly pronounced words to ignore.

Just didn’t click for me

Enjoyed the story and the narration is pretty good but is let down by several distracting mispronunciations. Sound track needs better editing. Some that annoyed me -
disconsolately was pronounced as dis-console-ately
pursuivant was pronounced as pursuiviant
impugned was pronounced as impunged
largesse was pronounced as larjeese
Tyburn was pronounced as Tibburn

Good story let down by mispronunciations

Great story well narrated and full of interesting historical references and facts - good and engaging listen - hope there is a sequel.
