This book is Black Hawk Down meets Enemy at the Gates meets Band of Brothers, and it's all true. It's about what happens when Western politicians carelessly assume we're living the "end of history"—until the Great Game comes back, uglier and more callous than ever. It's about men who tried to fix those mistakes, at the risk—sometimes loss—of their lives.

Shannon Monaghan follows a core group of Western volunteers in Ukraine, fighting together from the early battle for Kyiv through to the last stands at Severodonetsk and Bakhmut. They arrived alone, but became a family—back when nobody bothered to learn names, because they all expected to die.

These men knew they'd be fighting without the NATO support they were used to. They knew the danger they faced, and how they might be criticized for fighting someone else's war. But they also knew it was the right thing to do. This is their story.

An absolutely amazing read. It was so good to hear from the soldiers perspective on a very modern and ever changing battlefield.

Gripping Stories

A civilian can’t fully comprehend the magnitude of the decision that a foreigner makes when he decides to come and fight a "superpower" evil. This book allows a small window into the thoughts of those great men that left the security and the wealth of the western world to risk their lives fighting for the right cause.

Thank you Shannon for sharing their story.

**“I love this book because it feels like a modern-day Band of Brothers. It dives deep into not only the battles the soldiers face, but also what they’re truly fighting for, giving the story both heart and meaning. The author captures the bond between these men in a way that makes you feel like you’re right there with them—sharing their struggles, sacrifices, and small victories along the way.

What stood out most to me was how real and human the characters are. They’re not just soldiers on a battlefield; they’re brothers, friends, and ordinary people thrown into extraordinary circumstances. You see the fear, the courage, and the unbreakable loyalty that keeps them going.

This isn’t just a war story—it’s a story about resilience, friendship, and the cost of freedom. If you’re a fan of history, military stories, or just powerful tales of human connection, I can’t recommend this book enough.”**
