A gripping and revealing audiobook that brings to life the rise, power and true character of Henry VIII's most influential servant

Known widely as Henry VIII's 'right-hand man', Cromwell has captured imaginations throughout the centuries: but who was he really? In this major new biography, leading historian Tracy Borman examines the life, loves and legacy of the man who changed the shape of England forever.

Born a lowly tavern keeper's son, Cromwell rose swiftly through the ranks to become Henry VIII's right hand man, and one of the most powerful figures in Tudor history. The architect of England's break with the Roman Catholic Church and the dissolution of the monasteries, he oversaw seismic changes in England's history. Influential in securing Henry's controversial divorce from Catherine of Aragon, many believe he was also the ruthless force behind Anne Boleyn's downfall and subsequent execution.

Although for years he has been reviled as a Machiavellian schemer who stopped at nothing in his quest for power, Thomas Cromwell was also a loving husband, father and guardian, a witty and generous host, and a loyal and devoted servant. With fresh research and new insights into Cromwell's family life, his household and his close relationships, Tracy Borman tells the true story of Henry VIII's most faithful servant.©2014 Tracy Borman

Apparently Cromwell had a speech impediment that made him pronounce S as Sh and Chapuys had an accent like one of the cast of Allo Allo. Other parts seem to have been played by the Monty Python team using the most outlandish accents they could muster. It may have amused the cast, but reading a 16th century text in an exaggerated accent isn’t great for ease of understanding.

Please Audible, don’t try so hard to make it ‘different’. I just want someone to read me a story in a clear voice. Great story, the main narrator was good, but the character actors were hammy in the extreme, surplus to requirements and nearly (but not quite) spoilt it.

Why the silly accents?

outstanding, given the lockdown I sat in my garden and enjoyed every minute and learned much.what a man.what an author.

Whilst the main narrator was fine the very strange accents of character narration were so awful they were comical and very off putting.

Interesting

although the accents given to the characters were ridiculous and distracting. it took me a while to ignore the comical voices and tune into the story.

comprehensive and interesting

The narrator of the main text was fine. I bought the book after listening to the sample because I liked his voice. However the voices of the narrators of the letters, diaries and documents within the texts, I found irritating especially the voice of Cromwell, which featured quite a lot. I'm afraid this spoilt the book for me and I wish I had just read it myself.

Did not like the voice used for Cromwell
