An addictive and unforgettable novel of a marriage in freefall, shortlisted for the Costa Novel Award 2016.

A Richard and Judy Pick 2017.

A top 10 best seller, This Must Be the Place by Maggie O'Farrell crosses time zones and continents to reveal an extraordinary portrait of a marriage.

A reclusive ex-film star living in the wilds of Ireland, Claudette Wells is a woman whose first instinct, when a stranger approaches her home, is to reach for her shotgun. Why is she so fiercely protective of her family and what made her walk out of her cinematic career when she had the whole world at her feet?

Her husband Daniel, reeling from a discovery about a woman he last saw 20 years ago, is about to make an exit of his own. It is a journey that will send him off-course, far away from the life he and Claudette have made together. Will their love for one another be enough to bring Daniel back home?

Absolutely loved this book. Real, fragile, likeable, central characters trying to figure out a way to happiness supported by full, lifelike peripheral characters who you care about in equal measure. Clever intricately woven stories and a lightness of touch with language that at times left me breathless. Maggie O'Farrell at her very best.

Stunning

Maggie OFarrell takes us through Daniels life with infinitely delicate care - making us love him and feel for him in all the tragedies of his life - an exquisite book - you just don't want it to end!

Wonderful story of love and despair

Hmm. This story could have been cut by 50% and vastly improved imo. Blinking heck. Every time you turn around someone's had another baby or bumped into a random granny in the desert. Some good characters but the accents were deeply annoying. Disappointing.

A new character every 5 pages

The intertwined narrative held throughout the telling. I just loved this great listen. Daniel’s voice was particularly so right for the character.

Beautifully written beautifully read
