Jacqueline Cummings
In The Witches' Defense, Jackie Cummings unravels the extraordinary tale of her life turned upside down in a chilling real-life saga of accusation, fear, and injustice. This memoir offers a front-row seat to the satanic panic that gripped Bakersfield, California, in the 1980s—a time when the mere whisper of child molestation could ruin lives, and when being a good mother was no defense against the hysteria of a community determined to root out evil.
Jackie, a devoted mother of three, never imagined that voting for a tough-on-crime district attorney would one day lead to her own family’s destruction. It all begins when her close friends, are arrested under horrifying accusations, tearing their family apart. As the legal net tightens, Jackie finds herself caught in the crossfire, labeled as "The Babysitter" in a sinister investigation that has more to do with political ambition than with justice.
As Jackie and Jack flee in desperation with their children, they are thrust into a legal nightmare that not only steals the freedom of their friends and strips them of their own children. But the truth, as it slowly emerges, is even more terrifying—a tale of corruption, overreach, and the media’s role in fanning the flames of public outrage.
