Four books...one groundbreaking author.

Mrs Dalloway (1925)

One day; two lives. Mrs Dalloway prepares for a party, whilst a First World War veteran treads the same streets. Follow 24 hours in the lives of two extraordinary people, each of them recovering from the First World War. A hostess and a soldier come together...in the most unexpected of ways. Kristin Scott Thomas performs.

To the Lighthouse (1927)

A family’s summer holidays see them return to the Isle of Skye over days and years, sailing boats and enduring wars. As we follow the slow unfolding of the Ramsays' fortunes, both children and adults grow, love, lose. Listed as one of the best novels of the 20th century. Jessie Buckley performs.

A Room of One’s Own (1929)

Based on a series of lectures to women’s colleges, this collection of essays first published in 1929 explores a female’s need to have space to create, exist...survive. A must-listen for anyone exploring the roots of feminism - or simply what it is to be a woman. A provocative and pervasive listen that remains relevant to listeners of any age. Tilda Swinton performs.

The Waves (1931)

A dreamscape novel that follows six characters united by a single friend. Set against a stunning English coastal landscape, the novel dares to be one of Woolf’s most inventive narratives as it explores the journey from childhood to adulthood and beyond that - death, and all that we may learn. Vanessa Kirby, Adetomiwa Edun, Andrea Riseborough, Tracy Ifeachor, Samuel Barnett, Johnny Flynn and Juliet Stevenson perform.

Virginia Woolf was born Adeline Virginia Stephen on January 25 1882 to an affluent household in London. The seventh child in a blended family, Woolf’s family was prominent on the artistic scene, but haunted by trauma. At thirteen Virginia Woolf’s mother passed away and she suffered her first mental breakdown.

Whilst her brothers were formally educated at Cambridge, as a woman Virginia Woolf was unable to obtain a degree. Despite this she attended the Ladies Department of Kings College London studying classics and history. It was here that she first met members of the women’s rights movement.

In 1900 Virginia Woolf began writing professionally and following her father’s death the family moved to Bloomsbury, a bohemian part of London where they lived a free-spirited lifestyle. It was here that she formed the Bloomsbury Group with like-minded artists and intellectuals.

It was in the Bloomsbury Group that she met Leonard Woolf who she married and founded the Hogarth Press with. The Woolf’s house became a hub for cultural activity and Hogarth Press publications included books by T.S. Eliot, Sigmund Freud, E.M. Forster and Katherine Mansfield.

During the interwar years Woolf established herself as a leading writer publishing Mrs. Dalloway,To the Lighthouse and a numerous essays, letters and biographies. Woolf’s relationship with Rita Sackville-West inspired the ground-breaking Orlando cementing her place in the literary canon.

Woolf refused honorary degrees from institutions such as Manchester University, something many scholars suggest was in protest to the patriarchy. Feminism, alongside class, modernism, sexuality and trauma, was a theme Woolf engaged with continuously in her writing and in the 1970s she became a central figure of feminist criticism.

Throughout her life Virginia Woolf grappled with mental illness and she received treatment at several points in her life. In 1941 she died by suicide, famously drowning herself in the River Ouse at Lewes. Virginia Woolf remains one of the most influential writers of the 21st Century and her work has been translated into over 50 languages.

En alakalı

A Room of One's Own is the standout title in this collection, and the only one that is non-fiction. Woolf argues her case lucidly and in an entertaining way.
The fiction I found by turns beautiful and uninteresting. Frequently self indulgent yet with occasional phrases that take your breathe away in awe at their poetry.
