The stunning third novel from multiaward-nominated author Adam Brookes is paranoid, tense and spy fiction at its very finest.

In many ways Pearl Tao was a typical American child. She spent summer days at the pool, played softball and lingered at suburban barbecues in her home city of Washington, DC. Yet she is also an academic prodigy, with a university place sponsored by a secretive advanced technology corporation.

Only now, aged 19, has she begun to understand the terrifying truth of what her role is to be. What her parents intend her to become. Pearl's only hope of escape lies with two British spies: one, Trish Patterson, sidelined in disgrace; the other, former journalist Philip Mangan, gone rogue and following a trail of corruption. Helping Pearl might be the most important and dangerous thing either will ever do.

There've been many claimants to be the true heir to John le Carre...and Adam Brookes is up there with any of them. His protagonist isn't James Bond but a flawed, rounded character being manipulated by higher authorities, with dubious values and moral compasses. Right doesn't always win out. Colin Mace's narration brings life to a range of characters, male and female, of different nationalities and ages. All in all, worthy of five stars.

It's always fantastic to be reunited with Mangan, troubled as he is. He is handled with care by Brookes again on this adventure as he travels the globe with Patterson over seeing him and handling him carefully.

Superb Brookes

The author was a journalist in China. This story comes across as highly plausible, realistic and believable. I am a big fan of Adam Brookes and have now read all the 3 stories in this trilogy. Perhaps a good idea to read them in order, starting with Night Heron. This is the final one in the trilogy. The narrator is good and his style does not get in the way of the story. For me it was like watching a film.
Please write more Mr Brookes!

Beautiful, hard hitting and gripping story

I liked everything about this trilogy - the plots, the characters and the author’s style . I feel like I’ve visited all the countries about which he writes , tasted the food, been down those streets , stayed in those hotels . Having a cracking plot idea is one thing , having the ability to get a reader to live the story is quite another. I am quite astonished by Adam’s abilities. PS I also empathised with so many of the characters and was rooting for them - something which rarely happens for me . Thank you Adam and I do hope Philip and Trish meet again and that we get to hear all about it . Added Peanut would be a bonus .

Well! What a barnstormer of a trilogy

Great story that builds on the earlier books. Great narration and I look forward to the next book from this author.
