She was born to save this world. But falling in love will destroy it.
Still reeling from the mysterious deaths of her father and brother, Ary Gold survives only by sheer will in the icy wilds of the North. But when strangers arrive with stories of long-lost magic, Ary is thrust into a fate far larger than her sorrow. The realm of Nyrida is under threat. An ancient shadow wielder has risen, determined to plunge the world into corrupted darkness. And Ary is the only one who can stop him.
They say she has royal blood. That magic runs in her veins. That she is already promised in marriage—to a powerful commander whose army is her only hope of winning the coming war. But her fiercest challenge will not be on the battlefield . . .
Assigned to shape her into a warrior is a man cloaked in violence and secrets. Cold, arrogant, and maddeningly unreadable, he isn't her betrothed—but he may be her undoing . . .
Ary is powerless to resist the impossible attraction building between them. Will she follow her destiny? Or risk everything for a love as wild and dangerous as the power that's awakening inside her?
Shadows are closing in. Love is the greatest threat of all. And the fate of the world rests in the hands of a grieving girl who never asked to be chosen.
Contains mature themes.

It's tough for debut authors so I want to be clear this just wasn't at all my cup of tea, but the prose has an easy flow and the plot has potential enough for many new-ish to this genre to enjoy.
Unfortunately, for me, I disengaged from great swathes as so little happened. Action is not necessary for a book to be immersive (Robin Hobb shows that) but there was no character development, additional characters, emerging plot layers, sharp or witty dialogue or alternate POVs to drive the narrative forward.
The first person POV quickly became draining due to endless, repetitive internal dialogue. A bright moment came towards the very end when we finally get a short chapter from the MMC.
The plot revolved around the withholding of key information about who the FMC was until the final few pages but, as this was immediately obvious to the reader it removed any building tension for the reveal.
The main theme was the romance - which is, after all, what we want in a Romantcy, and there is plenty of yearning along with a tick list of tropes (yes, even the hot spring). But my biggest issue was that I found both MCs insufferable. Ella is at once naïve about the world (& for a good reason) but then switches between irresponsible self-sacrifice and petulant, selfish child, resorting to emotional manipulation.
It could be the target audience is younger teens but I would not have wanted my daughters to think the behaviour of the MC was in any way acceptable. For me, it crosses the line from 'ok' protectiveness (loved in this genre), into bullying, control and coercion - at every point he demanded not asked...
The narrators of the audiobook are great - I assume there will be more from the MC in the next book.

I liked both of these voice actors, but I wish they'd used the male a whole lot more.🎙👏 I did enjoy this audiobook, though.
This was a great vibes read.✨️😍🗡
Although this is a 'chosen one' romantic fantasy, it was very different from the ones I'd read before.
At 19, Aryella/Ary has been left to fend for herself for 8 weeks. She's near to starving and is freezing cold. Her memory was lost in a fall 6 months prior, so she remembers nothing before that time.🥺
Her friend Gemma turns up, and 4 men arrive soon after. She's told an almost unbelievable story about her birth father, his sister, and a prophecy that she is an integral part of!😳
This is a slow burn, with instant tension and attraction between Ary and Gavin. Their yearning is delicious!🥵 They can't be together as she's betrothed to the 'foretold' Army Commander.🥺
I enjoyed seeing the new 'found family' get to know each other on their long journey, although I was also sad for her that most of them were blind to her fear of the caves and what her betrothed and the betrothal would actually bring!🥺
I had guessed who Gavin and Ary were.✨️
(There are triggers throughout, so make sure you check them out.)
