Unlike most captains, Alex Racine can't detect an anomaly, log it, and ignore it. His curiosity drives him to push his ship to its limits, swinging around a massive planet to gain the velocity he needs to intercept the object.
What he captures in the dark isn't an asteroid. It's a crippled starship. Survivors of a lost colony ship are in stasis, and a self-aware digital entity is only hours from ending its existence. There's the unmistakable evidence of damage from a powerful weapon that his people have never seen. It's a first contact no one planned for, with a civilization as human as Alex's own and a threat from anything but.
The adversary has consumed entire worlds for six decades without leaving a single survivor to warn others. It does not respond to hails, does not negotiate, and does not stop its advance. Now two long-separated branches of humankind divided by a vast technological gulf must come together to have a fighting chance to survive.
A thought-provoking sci-fi adventure grounded in hard science and a hard-won alliance. It's a gripping story about humankind pushed toward extinction and what people are capable of doing when everything is at stake.
The first battle is proof of what's attainable, but the war has only begun.
