Senior Detective Kate Wakeland senses dark undercurrents in her beloved small town, Tallman's Valley.

She's glimpsed a silent town lying beneath the valley " a place where the streets and landscapes are the same, but where daylight never reaches. But as Kate begins to investigate the silent town, a shocking multiple shooting occurs on the mountain that bookends the valley, Witness Mountain.

Kate is forced to suspend all else and focus on the case at hand. How did a frail, elderly man manage to shoot his family? Did he have the help of his grandson, a teenage boy who can't account for his whereabouts that morning?

The height of a devastating fire season hinders Kate at every turn. Through the smoky veil hanging in the valley, Kate begins to suspect a connection between the Witness Mountain shootings and the silent town.

But the dangers are far greater than Kate ever imagined. There are people who will kill to conceal what they know and what they've done.

I’ve loved this series, I discovered it because of Caroline Lee who’s one of my favourite narrators.

I must admit, this wasn’t the best of the series but still beautifully written and atmospheric and well worth listening to or reading. And apologises to Ms. Lee but there are two characters in this one, an American and an Irishman, I found their accents really jarring to the narrative as a whole, sorry, they were awful!

5 1/2 *

I've really enjoyed this series. Caroline Lee narrates really well unless it comes to accents which she is comically terrible at, hence the 3 stars- unfortunately it can detract from the story. There are some well thought out characters and interwoven plots that run across the trilogy that keep you interested. The only thing was a bit too much explaining at the end of the book instead of everything unraveling through the story itself.

Good end to a good trilogy

And Caroline, I have listened to so many book narrated by you, and love your voice. But sorry, lovely, accents don’t appear to be your thing…

I like this series…
