Özet

Winner of the SOVAS Voice Arts Awards 2026, David Sweeney-Bear brings this grim world and its iconic characters to life in a masterful performance.

Described as 'savage and pure carnage' by reviewers, SABRE is a Gothic dark fantasy brimming with ruthless power struggles, perilous adventures, blood soaked twists, fraught romances and iconic characters to die for, making this series your next obsession...

Like Game of Thrones set to sea with a dose of The Poppy War and the grit of the First Law, all thrown into a unique Gothic era.

The Night Devils rule the seas without mercy. For two centuries, they have held the Merithian Empire at bay, binding them to an ocean of blood.

Yet, the unit faces disbandment for its growing power and brutality.

And when the vice admiral mysteriously vanishes, order falls to the infamous Commander Grenyard - a sailor feared for his searing hatred and cruelty. Thrust into this storm is ten-year-old, Todd Witherow. Conscripted into his late brother’s squadron, Sabre, Todd must endure war and survive Grenyard’s wrath while concealing a secret deemed punishable by death.

Back home, their kingdom edges towards ruin... The industrial revolution has been accelerated by a precious new resource, hycinthium-lapis. But this awakens dark ambitions. Corrupt lords desire supremacy, tainted Skuas seek dominion and King Oborus clings to his reign.

Only one man may prevent the slaughter: Todd’s imprisoned father and disgraced knight of the realm, Sir Alan Witherow.

Under oath, three veterans embark upon a perilous journey to rescue him, so he may help prevent a revolution and see his son returned. But time is short.

Their lives, the fate of their realm, lay in the hands of the legendary Sabres. Rave reviews and the narrator's phenomenal delivery prove this epic dark fantasy series is not to be missed!

I loved reading this story - so listening to it was just thrilling! epic choice in narrator. also have to say that my favourite parts was the singing, especially when listening in head phones. It felt like I was there, moving around with the story. As I've said this story is epic, epicly savage! 🤭 if I could give more than 5stars I so would!

I don't normally read dark gothic fantasy, but I'd heard about Sabre on TikTok and saw that it was available on Audible Plus so decided to give it a listen. And wow. The narration on this book immediately drew me in and even though it's not my normal genre, I loved the world-building and the character descriptions. They were just so vivid and well written. If you are into dark gothic fantasy, or even if you aren't, the audiobook version of this novel is fantastic. It did take me a little bit to get into the story, but I think that's because I'm used to listening to novels with fewer characters and this is obviously the first in a series. But once I got into it, I really, really enjoyed this. It actually felt more like I was listening to a movie, than a book, which is really good thing. I'm looking forward to the audiobook for Sabre Part 2.

Fantastic narration!

I found it took me a little while to get fully into the story as there is a lot of intrigue involved with the varying factions vying for power and control and a very wide range of different characters were introduced right from the beginning & so it took me some time into the story to differentiate between them all. The descriptive scenes were good and in some parts very vividly worded.
I found the narrator very easy to listen to, with clear diction, an arresting and absorbing voice and a brilliant ability to put expression and meaning into the wide range of characters parts.

Intriguing
