London, 1654. Oliver Cromwell is at the height of his power and has declared himself Lord Protector. Yet he has many enemies, at home and abroad.

London is a complex web of spies and merchants, priests and soldiers, exiles and assassins. One of the web's most fearsome spiders is Damian Seeker, agent of the Lord Protector. No one knows where Seeker comes from, who his family is, or even his real name. All that is known of him for certain is that he is utterly loyal to Cromwell, and that nothing can be long hidden from him.

In the city, coffee houses are springing up, fashionable places where men may meet to plot and gossip. Suddenly they are ringing with news of a murder. John Winter, hero of Cromwell's all-powerful army, is dead, and the lawyer, Elias Ellingworth, found standing over the bleeding body, clutching a knife.

Yet despite the damning evidence, Seeker is not convinced of Ellingworth's guilt. He will stop at nothing to bring the killer to justice: and Seeker knows better than any man where to search.

The contradictions and compromises of Cromwell's Proctectorate are rather brilliantly woven into the thrilling plot . . . If her next outing is as riveting as this one, she could challenge CJ Sansoms' Shardlake for dominion of the crowded historical crime niche.

A good tale, well told and also very well narrated. To be fair, it takes a little while to settle in, but the characterisation suits the story well and the voices of each character are easy to differentiate. Well worth a listen.

Narration not as bad as some would have you believe

I had a hard time getting into this one. The narrator had a lovely voice, but something about it allowed me to get frequently distracted, which is unusual for me. Too soothing? Anyway, the story was enjoyable, and in the end it was worth persisting.

Worth it in the end

Really enjoyed this book. Good plot, etc. but the narration made it. The brooding quality of Nicholas Camm’s voice is really quite something and evokes the dark and generally unpleasant nature of both the plot and (what I can only imagine) Cromwell’s London. It’s also quite refreshing...a northern voice playing a northern character. He doesn’t try to ‘act’ the other character’s parts too much...which again is quite refreshing. Personally, I struggle with a narrator trying to a man/woman/child. I have downloaded the second book in the series with a different narrator. He does this ‘acting’ thing and it’s appalling....plummy (very) English male voice doing aged 17th century wench, her husband, her son and her daughter in the same few sentiences. Dreadful. Anyway, that’s the next book. This one is brilliant. Listen and enjoy!
