"In 2043 the Red Plague took the world to the brink of extinction, but a few survived the horror which turned England into an open tomb.
Mechanic John Kane uses the vast storehouse of abandoned food and goods to start carving out a new life for himself.
Then two women cross his path. Seventy-three-year-old Maisie might save him from loneliness if he can keep her alive while Army communications corporal, Dawn, might become the love of his life if he can find her.
But to do either he must reach cities where armed gangs take what they want, tackle journeys through overgrown towns and villages which have become silent graves for the dead and survive escaped big game animals in a wild countryside fraught with danger.
And as modern society crumbles to pieces all their hopes for the future may lie with an antique last used during the Second World War."
The storyline through the overgrown countryside and mainly deserted towns and villages builds the tense atmosphere as it grips you to follow the main character John Kane and companions through a desolate and sometimes dangerous England to try and build a new future
An excellent novel that leaves one desperate for book 2
