A body on the beach. A myth come to life. And a killer who won’t stop…

When a mutilated body washes up on Sennen Beach, DS Liam Kilshaw is plunged into a case as dark and unforgiving as the Cornish winter. With the victim’s face so severely disfigured that identification is impossible, whispers of a local superstition begin to surface—the killing bears a chilling resemblance to the legend of Bucca Dhu, a vengeful sea demon said to demand human sacrifice.

But myths don’t murder people. When a second body is discovered just above the high-tide line, Kilshaw knows he’s racing against time. A missing crew member, a lost shipping container and a trail of cryptic clues all point to something far more sinister.

In a place where folklore and reality blur, Kilshaw must uncover the truth—before the killer strikes again.

...but those who believe in them do!

Liam finds himself tangled in a web of darkness and deceit in this latest case, a case that is seeped in history and horrifyingly cold actions and beliefs.
As the case has the team tangled, Liam's personal life is circling the drain and distracting him at the worst possible moments. This is an intriguing case that keeps you guessing and eager for the next book. I listened to this on Audible with Kindle Unlimited.

Strong characters with well-drawn lives. The story is well paced and unpredictable. Read it - it's worth it.

Interesting and involving plot, surprising, strange and satisfying.

Far creepier than the first book and just as good but a very different feel to it. Can definitely be read as a standalone but nice to know the full contact when the previous case is so frequently referred back to.
Really enjoyed the use of superstition and folklore within this case with the very creepy Bucca Dhu haunting and often overshadowing the case. The parallels between the strained relationships the detective has in his personal life and the victim with their families was interesting.

Still love the joking between Liam and Maya and Maya remains a firm favourite character of mine. Can't wait for book 3 and to see a return of Grace in future books

Good to see Liam again and look forward to the third book! Not for the faint hearted, but another novel by Matt Brolly which will keep you enthralled and need to listen non stop.
