Forget George and the Dragon. Forget Sir Lancelot and tales of Knightly exploits. This is dirty, bloody work. This is violent, visceral action. This is a mercenary knight as you've never seen one before.

Twenty eight florins a month is a huge price to pay, for a man to stand between you and the Wild.

Twenty eight florins a month is nowhere near enough when a wyvern's jaws snap shut on your helmet in the hot stink of battle, and the beast starts to rip the head from your shoulders. But if standing and fighting is hard, leading a company of men - or worse, a company of mercenaries - against the smart, deadly creatures of the Wild is even harder.

It takes all the advantages of birth, training, and the luck of the devil to do it.

The Red Knight has all three, he has youth on his side, and he's determined to turn a profit. So when he hires his company out to protect an Abbess and her nunnery it's just another job. The abbey is rich, the nuns are pretty and the monster preying on them is nothing he can't deal with.

Only it's not just a job. It's going to be a war ...

Terrific medieval fantasy with three-dimensional characters, realistic battle scenes, intricate plotting and attention to the minutiae of medieval life.
Want to know what it would really be like to fight a dragon on horseback? These are the books for you.

A good book, well read but spoilt by the annoyingly numerous gaps in the recording.

This series is fantastic. The characters are deep, varied and many. Characters who I presumed to hate at first became favourites. Mr Cameron weaves a hell of a tale that's fast paced, imaginative and as well layered to rival the likes of Tolkien. My only negative is the change of narrator's half way through the series. It doesn't ruin it but it felt like the characters were portrayed slightly differently. All said I'd highly recommend this series.

Truly an epic...

Wow where to start. I obviously didn't read the synopsis of the story before starting as it was "just another" Miles Cameron book, of which I have read and listened to many it started off as your started medieval knight sorry all armours, horses, squires and swords and then takes a huge twist by introducing fantasy elements. It's still medieval "England" or other but with magic, goblins, sages, multi armed beasts and war on an epic scale. I kept thinking "this is not for me" (although I like both genres) and "I will stop soon" but the story and the confusion, or is that fusion of story lines kept me intteagued. 30 hours later and I'm still thinking I'm not sure hut I have already bought the next 3 books, so maybe I am. The only irritating thing about the audio book was the regular announcent of who the author was and the book title. I must have heard it 100 times during the book, sometimes after only 1 paragraph. If the second book is the same I might return books 2-4 as it is extremely annoying and disruptive to the story. I know who the author is and what the book is called! I'm not American and need reminding every 5 minutes!

Certainly different and Addictive

The days are not long enough. A decent chunky story that grips you by the brain and doesn't let go! Interesting storyline weaving too.

Pretty darn good😀
