Combine a suspenseful murder mystery with theology (the study and explanation of religious faith, practice, and experience) and you have The Rector - with an allegory of Christ's ministry!

Martha McRae is a widow living in a small Mississippi Delta town in the 1950s. She's obsessed with the sudden death of her Episcopal church's young rector. A murderer could go free if she doesn't investigate. But Martha is torn. If she pursues the suspect, her Bible study friend's awful secret could be revealed. It would be devastating, and life-changing. When the new rector arrives, she encounters a new puzzle - one that takes her into Parchman Penitentiary, where she comes face to face with evil.

I found this recording by accident and thought I’d give it a try. It describes itself as a Christian murder mystery - the religious side isn’t too heavy but it does form an integral part. The writing is excellent. The interaction between the different characters is amazing. I could see Dolly Parton and Lilly Tomlin playing in the future movie. I also loved how Martha has a nip or two of sherry. The baddy Father Kane is very well portrayed. I could really see him clearly in my mind. A huge round of applause has to go to the narrator too. Her amazing ear for people’s different voices is staggering. I will download the next book The Actress when it has been recorded. The Rector is meant to be turned into a film soon. I hope they keep faithful to the book.
