A small girl brings Joe Gunther a bird's nest - made partially of human hair. In the search to match a body - and an identity - to the hair's owner, Joe comes across an unexplained death, a grisly murder, and a sudden disappearance. All seem to be entangled in a puzzling web of municipal corruption, blackmail, and industrial espionage. A shell-shocked World War II veteran nicknamed the Ragman may hold the key to it all - but only if Joe can get him to talk before the murderer strikes again.

Once again another great story and I love the banter between Gail and Joe which lightens the mood of the story.

Another great story

Very hard to find fault in this series. Every story so far has been very different from the last and the characters are quite well defined. The reader is great in that he sounds like a tired policeman who still has something to offer. I'm binge listening the whole series but I'm not looking forward to the last one.

another winner!

This book is full of clichéd character, corrupt officials, the loner who won't be missed, the people on the take down to the weird brothers. However the story moves along really quickly and the tone noticeably changed from the beginning chapters. I think by now I would expect to know more of the main characters but they remain only about as complex as book one. Overall a good book.

another good story, this is how I imagine real life detectives to be, I think the narrator's voice is perfect for Joe,
