It is the sweltering summer of 1997 when strait-laced, straight-A student Karen meets Biba - a bohemian and impossibly glamorous aspiring actress. She is drawn to her new friend’s carefree world of constant parties, and quickly abandons her old life to move into the crumbling Highgate mansion Biba shares with her brother Rex and a stream of lodgers. For a while, life is one long summer of love. But summer must end. And by the end of theirs, two people would be dead.

As a huge fan of the late Ruth Rendell, this was suggested as an alternative author in a similar vein. And how right they were! I enjoyed this immensely. Despite thinking I had sussed out most of the plot twists, the author was always able to surprise me, right to the end. Very well written, great plot and believable characters. The narrator was fine but could have perhaps managed a little more variation between character voice but, overall, an enthralling listen.

I read this book years ago. I listened to the audiobook in preparation for House of Mirrors and I’m so glad I did, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
A fantastic story, beautifully written with charismatic characters that invokes the spirit of bohemian London in the 1990s.
Erin Kelly’s books are always an exercise in delayed gratification - there are secrets, there are hints, how badly do you want to know? The endings always deliver and there are always surprises, but the quest for the answers is just as enjoyable as the destination.

I love this book

Excellent style of writing, reminded me very much of the incredible Ruth Rendell's writing and her stand alone psychological thrillers. Narration, very very good but felt that there should have been longer pauses between back then and present day.
It's an interesting story with characters who we can all imagine and have known people like it. Descriptions also very good. For a debut novel this is a fabulous start.
I'd recommend this book to anyone who loves a well written book, I think personally it's mildly psychological but the twist at the end is brilliant although a little predictable.

Great writng Loved it !

Erin always writes books with such easy to recognise characters. You van picture the 3 main protaganists so well. You are also transported to, I believe, late 1970's onwards London town. A time when things were simple, no social media and friendships that meant being in people's actual proximity. The clothes, the house, the whole college, hippy scene is there. It is easy to see how Karen was woven into Biba's lifestyle. Biba, a free spirit, along with her brother Rex, show Karen a different side of London and a more laid back type of life than the one she and her parents had set out for her. I loved their love story, yes that's what it is. A love story that of course, like most? soon turns dark. Another fab listen and a great ending which satisfyied me a great deal.
Erin if you read this, could you do a novella of Biba's story? I would love to hear her side. ;)
