A brand-new stand-alone novel in the New York Times best-selling Briar U series!
What I learned after last year’s distractions cost my hockey team our entire season? No more screwing up. No more screwing, period. As the new team captain, I need a new philosophy: hockey and school now, women later. Which means that I, Hunter Davenport, am officially going celibate...no matter how hard that makes things.
But there’s nothing in the rulebook that says I can’t be friends with a woman. And I won’t lie - my new classmate Demi Davis is one cool chick. Her smart mouth is hot as hell, and so is the rest of her, but the fact that she’s got a boyfriend eliminates the temptation to touch her.
Except three months into our friendship, Demi is single and looking for a rebound.
And she’s making a play for me.
Avoiding her is impossible. We’re paired up on a yearlong school project, but I’m confident I can resist her. We’d never work, anyway. Our backgrounds are too different, our goals aren’t aligned, and her parents hate my guts.
Hooking up is a very bad idea. Now I just have to convince my body - and my heart.

only small annoyance was that Teddy Hamilton cannot do a female voice with a light Spanish accent, kind took me out of it when he had to speak her parts.
Best in the series

I was however disappointed with the female narrator. She isn’t great. Her reading style was a bit monotone and the acting not great. She also pronounced a lot of words incorrectly, which I found frustrating. Teddy Hamilton was great though.
I’m sad I only have a couple more to listen to in the two Briar U series, but I’m really looking forward to Connor’s story.
Another great addition to the series

Annoying lead female character

Can never go wrong with Teddy Hamilton but I really really struggled with the female voice for this book so much that I wish I had read it instead of listened to it. The pronunciation of some words was highly frustrating (it’s not hard to google how to pronounce Greenwich) but the main issue I had was the tone of Demi just felt wrong at some key times of the storyline (eg playfulness tone when it should have been sexy or serious and at times just very monotone). Plus the female version of Hunter didn’t align with Teddys version of Hunter which I know sometimes doesn’t always work with these types of books… but this felt like Hunter was two entirely different people with two entirely different personalities. I didn’t feel like she captured him well. Some voice artists just get it or maybe they need to sit in the same room to connect on the characters more.
Good story line but struggled with the female audio

This book was a masterclass in crafting a compelling opposites-attract romance, but it's also a story that dares to delve into the complexities of mental health, making it a truly unforgettable read. 💔
What sets "The Play" apart from your typical sports romance is its willingness to tackle difficult subjects. The portrayal of a suicide attempt is handled with sensitivity and raw honesty, adding a layer of depth that truly resonated with me. Hunter and Demi’s journey is filled with tender moments, playful banter, and a slow-burn intensity that kept me glued to the pages. I was utterly invested in their relationship, rooting for them to find their happily ever after.
I read this book cover to cover in a single sitting. It is a seamless blend of sizzling romance with poignant emotional depth. 🏒 This isn't just another spicy hockey romance, it's so much more than that and a definite five-star read.
(Goes without saying that Teddy Hamilton knocks it out of the park with the narration as always 🩷)
