Ambrose Chitterwick is in the lounge of the Piccadilly Palace Hotel, away from his overbearing aunt, to enjoy some afternoon refreshments when he witnesses a murder. It looks like suicide but he saw something being put into the lady’s coffee cup. He is Scotland Yard’s chief witness but he also conducts an investigation of his own. Despite his diffidence and self-deprecation, his sleuthing is not to be sniffed at. There are plenty of twists and turns in this journey to enjoy, especially with master narrator David Timson in the driving seat.

A journalist as well as a novelist, Anthony Berkeley was a founding member of the Detection Club and one of crime fiction’s greatest innovators. He was one of the first to predict the development of the ‘psychological’ crime novel.

Very well-observed central character - I loved Mr Chitterwick! The narrator was great - apart from… I can’t think of a way of saying this without spoiling the story, but I think the way one character in particular was voiced made them seem quite suspicious to me from the get-go, whereas I think Berkeley’s characterisation is quite a bit more subtle and ambiguous than that. But overall, well worth a listen

Love Mr Chitterwick

90% very good then tailed off into rather unbelievable territory towards the end. But still a good listen.

Good but not the best

Good story, around a distinctive main character. But oh so slow, so many details about how he, the amateur detective, feels embarrassed, confused, tentative, hesitant…. And some of the other characters are a bit superficial and cliche. The story and style of narrative didn’t age well. Narrator is very good, very much in line with the old fashioned style of the book.

Enjoyable story, slow narrative

A plot that takes the reader along with the amateur detective in discovering the clues that point the way to the murderer and ‘his’ method.

For lovers of Golden Age detective fiction.

I had to stop listening, too slow story line for me. And too repetitive, but good star to the fantastic narrator!

So so slow. GREAT narrator.
