A complex mystery thriller. Sager writes modern gothic very well and there's bags of atmosphere in this book

This was a great book to listen too, I enjoyed it very much. I didn’t see the end coming. I enjoyed the characters, very well written and great plot.

The book begins with the murders of the Hope family. The daughter, Lenora, was believed to be responsible, though the police never proved it. Now Lenora lives at Hope's End, confined to bed, unable to speak or move any part of her body except one hand. Enter Kit, a caregiver/nurse who is employed to look after Lenora, and who has her own dark secrets.

This book moved at a slowish pace, but I was soon hooked by the story which made me want to listen when I really should have been going to sleep. The pace did pick up considerably in the last third of the book, and there were so many twists I started to feel dizzy. Ok, some were a bit far fetched, but the book was so entertaining that I can forgive that. I really, really loved the setting of the dark, creepy, crumbling old house though I did wonder how the hell anyone would ever want to live there.

The narration by Regina Reagan and Stephanie Cannon was great.

First I want to say I loved the setting of this book, in sn old mansion on the cliffs. I was hooked from the first page the opening scene was great. The story was so gripping for 2/3 of the book and would have rated it 5 star if it kept going that way but the last 10 chapters were rushed. Although the story was plausible I just felt it made no sense in the end, I get twists are supposed to be shocking but in this book it was a little unbelievable. The end was very scattered, hard to follow who and what was going on. The big twist at the end I knew from the first encounter of the character and I wish it was included earlier on the story as I think everyone suspected it. The other issue I had with this book is everyone is so unlikable even sweet Jessie I just couldn’t get on with. Finally I’m a very atmospheric reader love the description of eras and especially moments caught in time, this book was set in the 80s however you would never know which was disappointing. I feel it was added in just to eliminate the pitfalls of technology. Overall I enjoyed the book but didn’t love it. I just felt underwhelmed by the end when the beginning was so great.

This could have been so much better
