Three years ago, the nation gasped in horror when the President of the United States barely escaped an assassination attempt that left two dead - the vice president’s wife and the attempted assassin. Even after numerous investigations proved otherwise, conspiracy theorists argue that the assassin was acting on orders from the CIA, FBI, and every federal agency within a hundred miles of the capital.
Aspiring Author Dean Conway is the last person Lieutenant Commander Murphy Thornton wants to spend his Saturday afternoon when they end up at the same wedding reception table. While their wives tend to bridesmaid duties, Murphy is trapped listening to Dean’s latest work-in-project - completing the manuscript of an investigative journalist who’d disappeared months earlier.
“She was number 12,” Dean says.
“Twelve?” Murphy asks.
“Twelve witnesses connected to or investigating The Nutcracker shooting have died either in an accident or suicide.”
Two days later, Dean dies suddenly, but not before sending a text message to Murphy: “13.”

This is book four in the series and while it does work as a standalone, I think the series just gets better and better with each new book. There is something about the stories this author writes that is captivating and as a result is a compelling listen.
She knows how to create characters that you care about and it feels like catching up with family every time you join them. Okay most families aren't knee deep in murder investigations or conspiracy theories when you visit but that's what makes them special. That and the fact that they will soon have you chuckling at the banter, friendship or the dog antics.
The mystery side of the story is also very clever, with lots going on. Once the author gets a plot idea in her head I am sure it keeps her up, juggling all the balls until it is finished, it certainly keeps me up late into the night with the phase just one more chapter. In this book the conspiracy theory has them looking in a number of deaths connected to a shooting that involved an attempt on the President and then it's of and running following one twist after another, especially as Jessica's best friend is a suspect in one of the deaths. Off to start another book by this author, I don't normally do that preferring to have a break between books but there is something about this author that has me eagerly picking up the next book.
While attending a wedding, of which his wife is in the wedding party, Murphy has no chance of escaping Dean. A writer with the crazy idea that the attempt on the President's life that resulted in the death of the vice president’s wife is something a lot bigger than what's being reported. He can connect thirteen deaths to the night of the nutcracker show and he wants Murphy to confirm something before it is published. Murphy is sceptical until he learns out about the brakes failing in Dean's car while his wife was driving it. Then a bomb claims another life and Murphy wonders should he be adding another name to the list. The police are looking at the wife and Jessica is determined to clear her. At the same time Murphy has his own problems at work, when his boss disappears and is found dead. Does she have a connection to the nut cracker conspiracy too? What secrets will Murphy, Jessica and the team uncover?
I like the narrator. His use of accents in this story really brought the characters to life for me and it was a pleasure listening to such an entertaining narrator and story.
