David Bentley Hart undertook this new translation of the New Testament in the spirit of "etsi doctrina non daretur", "as if doctrine is not given". Reproducing the texts' often fragmentary formulations without augmentation or correction, he has produced a pitilessly literal translation, one that captures the texts' impenetrability and unfinished quality while awakening listeners to an uncanniness that often lies hidden beneath doctrinal layers.

The early Christians' sometimes raw, astonished, and halting prose challenges the idea that the New Testament affirms the kind of people we are. Hart reminds us that they were a company of extremists, radical in their rejection of the values and priorities of society not only at its most degenerate, but often at its most reasonable and decent.

"To live as the New Testament language requires," he writes, "Christians would have to become strangers and sojourners on the earth, to have here no enduring city, to belong to a Kingdom truly not of this world. And we surely cannot do that, can we?"

"This necessary, brilliantly presented translation reads like taking a biblical studies class with a provocative professor." (Publishers Weekly)

I did enjoy learning more about the familiar stories I grew up learning about from others. Good to hear it direct from the source.

the narrator was okay.

the lack of proper titles made it frustrating as this isn't really something you listen to from beginning to end. you dip in and out, which was difficult to do.

A fine story

I have this for a while but I have to confess the Audible version sounds like a robot that doesn’t enjoy what it’s reading.
It’s requires a voice that engages, makes you want to listen rather than switch off.
Sadly an absence of heart or the present of AI.

Hard work

I was raised a Methodist and bombarded with the bible from an early age to the extent that it became like, eating all my vegetables... I knew it was good for me but... Ugh!

Within 2 hours of listening to this translation I was absolutely in love with the bible for the first time in my life. No longer consuming it begrudgingly but actually looking forward to listening.

I'm now on my third playthrough and I felt moved to leave a review to show my gratitude to the wonderful DBH and the very talented narrator. You have produced a work that has moved a grown man to tears on several occasions.

Thank you!

And you, Logos ❤️🙏🏼

Incredible

The New Testament is the greatest book ever written, however it’s translation has been used and interpreted for many political purposes to the nth degree and a real, unbiased, untainted version has been desperately needed.

My favourite part are the footnotes and appendix where the author using both logic and experience, he explains his position on some of translations. It’s a beautiful and eloquent and stimulating. I don’t always agree, and this was the best bit.

A very unbiased and honest translation by a master

I really enjoy listening to this version of the New Testament as a returning Christian without any specific denomination. The differences to the NIV or King James versions are quite apparent and sometimes surprising.

One thing that lets it down is the poor chapter listing that makes it impossible to select the specific books and chapters. Definitely needs Audible to re-index this please.

Interesting literal translation
