Despite its short length this story was wonderfully descriptive, and very tense as a result. There's a reason why it has both inspired and been adapted by countless other media since it was written in the 1920s.

Very Powerful for its Brevity

The hero of this tale, Sanger Rainsford, is a professional hunter renowned for hunting snow leopards in Tibet. In view of this you may find your sympathies for him instantly wane, but this is worth sticking with as this story of his plight at the hands of the evil General Zaroff is tightly written and genuinely gripping. Films like The Hunger Games and characters like Hannibal Lecter owe a great debt to the portrayal of General Zaroff as a cultured psychopath who believes he is above the rest of humanity and commands every scene he appears in. The narrator has a very cosy voice, probably not best suited to this material, but he makes a good fist of delivering a sound theatrical performance.

A classic story well performed, it's only a short novella but Harrison rings every drop of tension out of it.

Short but Great

This novel is referred to and quoted in so many great books nowadays that it would be almost impossible not to be disappointed by the real thing.
This is not the case!
While the tale itself may be tame by modern standards, it wasn’t at the time we must remember. Beyond all doubt the quality of the writing and composition surpasses expectation.

Great pacing and a fun twist, could’ve done with the antagonist not sounding like Dracula
