When DI Ben Kitto sees a baby thrown into Penzance harbour, he prays it's a trick of the light. But the threat is real. The child survives – barely – and soon a chilling pattern emerges. As the Burning Sky Festival brings dancers, dreamers and stargazers to Cornwall's coast, children begin to vanish.

A small mermaid figurine is found beside each scene, echoing the legend of the Mermaid of Zennor, who lured a man to his death beneath the waves. Still reeling from a devastating bereavement and determined to protect his young son, Ben is pulled into a deadly investigation. Then the killer's messages begin arriving at his home.

As the summer solstice approaches, Ben must confront the boundaries of love, loss and obsession. In a final, desperate chase along the headland, only his bond with Noah – and the loyalty of his dog, Shadow – can prevent tragedy from repeating itself.

This is more a story of a grieving father and his responsibility for his young son’s emotional wellbeing. The crime story was very good but i thought, incidental. I’m not sure about continuing the series because Kitto seems to have his future mapped for a long time. Perhaps he should continue as a carpenter or join Ray building boats for his son’s sake. I thought this novel was overly sentimental. Loved all the previous books and location.

Not the usual Kitto

I love the Ben Kitto series and was looking forward to this recent addition.

The start introduces some changes to the series that I wasn't really a fan of and didn't think were really necessary.

Kitto usually solves the case through excellent detective work, but in this edition he just seems to stumble into the solution.

I'll read the next, but it's left me less eager for more Ben Kitto stories.

Not as good as the rest

Really well written with a sensitive insight into human struggles. Quite exceptional. The storyline is good without graphic details which sometimes go hand-in-hand with this genre. Well worth a listen.

Excellent
