Don't miss the next utterly gripping novel in the Cotton Malone series from New York Times Bestselling author Steve Berry, available to pre-order now!

Former Justice Department operative, Cotton Malone, has been asked to assist the Swiss guard with determining whether Cardinal Jason Richter has engaged in bribery and theft. It's a favor for Stephanie Nelle, once his boss at the Magellan Billet, who is doing a favor for the Vatican. But nothing is as it seems. Three hundred thousand euros are found, a Swiss Guardsman is murdered, and a killer sets his sights on both Cotton and the cardinal.

Together they are thrust into a search for a forgotten document, a 16th century Pledge of Christ executed by Pope Julius II that reveals a debt owed by the Vatican, still valid after five centuries, now worth in the trillions of dollars. But when the trail to collecting that debt leads Cotton to the famed Medici of Florence-a family that history says died out, without heirs, centuries ago-he realizes that two more things also hang in the balance. Who will be the next prime minister of Italy, and who will become the next pope.

From a quiet hilltop village in central Germany, to the ancient city of Siena with its famed Palio horse race, and finally to the historic piazzas, churches, and crypts of Florence, Cotton Malone uncovers the answers, one by one, everything hinging on when, and if, the Medici return.©2025 Steve Berry Action & Adventure Espionage Historical Mystery Mystery, Thriller & Suspense Spies & Politics Suspense Thriller & Suspense İtalya Orta Çağ

PRAISE FOR STEVE BERRY
A fast-paced, well-written, entertaining adventure
[Berry's] most ambitious and relevant thriller to date. A no-holds-barred, high-stakes romp with echoes of class spy novelists like John le Carré, Len Deighton, and Alistair MacLean . . . This is a dream read for the unabashed thriller aficionado, a story stitched along classic lines that never disappoints in laying out a riveting and relentless tapestry
Berry skillfully lays out yet another tantalizing historical what-if
Berry keeps finding enticing alternate-history mysteries for Malone to solve . . . Keep 'em coming
Ominously up-to-date

The historical background was quite interesting. However, comment needs to be made on some of the narration. There is one character, who is an Irish cardinal and the narrator makes quite a fist of his accent - Tom Cruise in "Far and Away" meets a comic West Country pirate from a Gilbert and Sullivan opera! This aside, the narration is mostly clear and carries the narrative well.

Interesting enough

To repetitive on all the history stuff, whilst interesting first time around all the repeats soon makes me not care about the whole story anymore, at least we did not have the narration of the author through it, as that stopped me from listening the first time around.

But unfortunately whilst I used to love the books, not anymore......... sorry Mr Berry you lost a reader/listener.

Used to love the Cotton Malone Books.......
