In war-torn Yugoslavia, a young film maker and photographer and a German officer have been murdered. Assigned to the case is military intelligence officer Captain Gregor Reinhardt. Already haunted by his wartime actions, he soon finds that his investigation may be more than just a murder - and that the late Yugoslavian film maker may have been much more brilliant - and treacherous - than anyone knew.©2013 Luke McCallin (P)2014 Tantor Media Inc Genre Fiction Historical International Mystery & Crime Mystery Thriller & Suspense War & Military Savaş Askeri

Although I find the narrator’s voice annoying, I did settle into the story and found that it had enough twists to keep me listening.

A variation on a war story

There is a macabre charm to the intensity, sudden violence, and very strict yet identity focussed world of societies like this, whether its the samurai, roman empire, or third reich. I was surprised about whether if it would follow a main character who is a genuine supporter of Adolf and the rest, but Gregor is a likable guy. You feel him, his motivations, and it’s an overall interesting detective-themed book in a unique setting during the second world war. I will give the 2nd book a listen as well.

The infamous reich reaching east.

This is very well written and narrated, with an impressive aura of truth. However, it took at least half of the book to differentiate and remember the unfamiliar German and Yugoslav names. But the story was compelling enough for me to persevere and I'm glad I did.

Thrilling, if confusing!
