2040-2045: In the years after the cataclysmic Yellowstone eruption there is massive economic dislocation as populations flee Datum Earth to myriad Long Earth worlds. Sally, Joshua, and Lobsang are all involved in this perilous work when, out of the blue, Sally is contacted by her long-vanished father and inventor of the original Stepper device, Willis Linsay. He tells her he is planning a fantastic voyage across the Long Mars and wants her to accompany him. But Sally soon learns that Willis has ulterior motives ...

Meanwhile U. S. Navy Commander Maggie Kauffman has embarked on an incredible journey of her own, leading an expedition to the outer limits of the far Long Earth.

For Joshua, the crisis he faces is much closer to home. He becomes embroiled in the plight of the Next: the super-bright post-humans who are beginning to emerge from their 'long childhood' in the community called Happy Landings, located deep in the Long Earth. Ignorance and fear are causing 'normal' human society to turn against the Next - and a dramatic showdown seems inevitable . . .

Here they come again, Terry Pratchett and Stephen Baxter, skipping along their quantum string of planets like giddy schoolboys - and what a joy it is to have them back . . . it's a thrilling and ceaselessly entertaining ride.
Imaginative, sense-of-wonder SF at its best . . . thrilling stuff from the masters.

I loved the imagination that created the works of the Long Earth and still love following the characters as they journey through it, in a quest comparable to that of the Starship Voyager.

This book introduced the Next in the series, and it, like them, is clearly better than its predecessor. Real page -Turner, and beautifully read.

Next in the series - better than its predecessor!

As the third book in the series this one was make or break for me, having liked the first one & found the second one quite boring. This one blows the others away! I felt a lot more happens & the universe this is set in really develops & fills out. I couldn't stop listening to this one & now can't wait until the 4th one finishes downloading!

Fascinating

For me, the collaboration works well. Baxter's idea heavy, often challenging prose lightened by quirky ideas from the great man.
Not too heavy on plot but full of scientific notions.

Heavier on the Baxter than Pratchett.

Would you try another book written by Terry Pratchett and Stephen Baxter or narrated by Michael Fenton Stevens?

Yes, and I have done. However the narration isn't the best - some vary strange accents used for some of the characters. If you are familiar with Baxter & Pratchett's work individually you can see the mix in this series well. Unfortunately, in the later books Baxter's way of slipping into long narratives (which serve to paint a great picture of 'everyday' life in the particular universe - or universes in this case!) doesn't really do anything to add to the story. I started & finished this (and bought the 4th in the series) but no way as good as the first which I feel had much more suspense and more of the Pratchett twists & turns and, of course, gentle humour.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Not what you'd call 'gob smacking'

How could the performance have been better?

For me, MFS isn't best suited to this genre - however I understand that there are many who will feel he's done a great job on this - its just personal.

Was The Long Mars worth the listening time?

No, not really. I bought the first (The Long Earth) in hard back format - couldn't put it down, and just thought the concept and writing were great - nice humour too. I passed it on to my nephew as I thought he'd love it, being a big Pratchett fan, and wanted to introduce him to the Baxter Pratchett cooperative! I didn't bother to recommend the Long War, and certainly won't with the long Mars.

OK as far as it goes, not the best in the series
